    Mike - I think it boils down to a combination of boldness and restraint (which may sound contradictory, but in this case it's not). Be bold in pushing the highlights and shadows, while at the same time exercising restraint in the placement of these extremes - i.e. limiting your highest highlight tone to a single small area or a single fold that would receive the maximum light. This technique applies to medium or light colors, painting very dark colors calls for a slightly different approach.
