Here is a publication to gladden the heart of anyone with an interest in the French army. This is a two volume set dealing with the uniforms, equipment and history of the hussars and chasseurs à cheval. The two volumes are well bound and comprise 357 and 319 pages respectively, the paper is high quality gloss and the books are presented in a cardboard slip-case. The books are the first part of what will be a series on all units of the French army of the Second Empire and the Republic until 1915. The books cover the conquest of Algeria, the Crimea, the Mexican expedition, the Franco-Prussian War and the start of WW1.

To say that these books are superb is an understatement. Full of detail and coloured images, P1020296.JPG
photos, uniform studies, museum pieces and drawings, this must easily be the most comprehensive study of its type. It goes without saying that the books constitute an invaluable source of information for modellers and military historians.

The text is in French and the writing is scholarly but without being stuffy or academic. Those of you who don't speak the language should be able to pick up the essentials with the help of a dictionary: but if you ever needed an incentive to learn French, then this is it. The authors are to be congratulated on a fantastic piece of work, one which I can not recommend highly enough.

The books are currently available on E-bay at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151165473429 for 50 Eros, which to my mind is an absolute bargain. Published by Editions du Canonnier in Nantes.

    Hi Richard
I got this a few weeks ago and have to say it's the most comprehensive book on Uniforms I've seen in a very long time. and for the price it's a steal. It's great quality and it does not matter that it's in French as it's full of photos and all the info you need on the cav uniforms. from the Crimea to ww1. would highly recommend.

Hi Nap, yes, absolutely agree, and to be the first volume in a series covering the whole army. A much neglected period and lots of raw material for my good friend Ellie Sahib.

The French do produce some excellent volumes, and I've just spotted one I've ordered via the Ebay link quoted above under 'see other items'. A cracker of a book on Napoleon's Berline.....PeeDee, you might want to take a look!
Thanks for the review, Richard ; led me into spending yet more on books:cool:
