I agree about the vallejo, I'm really enjoying the versatility of acrylics but would be intersted in trying out Andrea and scale 75 etc, the only problem is being in Australia you're paying top dollar for all of them plus postage. Wonder how they would turn out with taubmans or british paints?

I have the Andrea white set... it's not bad but I find the texture a little coarse. Almost grainy. Vallejo is thin and smooth while the Scale 75 paints (which are still fairly new to me) are much thicker than Vj they are still very smooth. However with their flatness if you water them down too much the dry a little chalky. Using the retarder allows for wet blending so it doesn't need to be overly thinned to get nice transitions.

Of course, these are just one painter's opinions... and you know what they say about opinions

Looks great Colin. Thanks for reminding me of retarder. After 20 or more years not painting, not that I did much previously. I have decided to return to the hobby. Used oils previously, but now trying Acrylics using the thin washes (veils) approach to shading, but the retarder seems the way to go for me. What is your ratio of retarder to paint, and do you also use water with it?

Looking forward to seeing the finished product .

    Cheers

Late to the party (as usual) but this is looking fantastic Colin - the blues are rendered very naturally and the sleeve insignia is awesome (I'm a sucker for insignia). Looking forward to seeing more progress!

    Cheers,
    Brian

Thanks Chris, as to ratios... how's this for scientific? Three or four drops of retarder for a blob of paint. Stir.

Thanx Brian, I'm actually quite happy with the blue of the trousers... that medium/light blue is a colour I usually struggle with. I didn't know sleeve insignia are a fetish of yours... duly noted :sneaky:

Sorry I couldn't be more specific Chris, I just kinda eyeball everything without really measuring.

Not at all Colin. That is enough for me. As we all know, it is a lot of trial and error, and just trying out different techniques and ratios. I now have a ratio that works well going by your painting. Thanks again for bringing up the retarder approach. Much appreciated.

Waiting to see this project finished. The Iron Brigade has always been one of my favourite formations in the ACW.

    Best wishes

Update... we're down to the vinegar strokes with this one. Basically, hands, boots, rifle, copious amounts of dirt and a place for him to stand.

Very good work Colin! The different blue tones are great, specially the pants, which is hard to achieve.

Thanks Bob, I remember your excellent version and the changes you made on the fig... Other than removing the buttons on the collar, I did it "out of box". Question- Should there be a regimental identifier stenciled on the back of the pack or is it not a standard issue thing?

Thank you Brother Zeno, much appreciated. I can give you the mixes I used for both blues... Note, they are all Scale 75 colours.

    Trousers-
    2nd HL- Sky Blue
1st HL- Base + Sky Blue
    Base- Mediterranean Blue + Walnut
1st Shade- Base + Cantabric Blue
    2nd Shade- Cantabric Blue

    Coat-
    2nd HL- Mediterranean Blue
1st HL- Base + Mediterranean Blue
    Base- Navy Blue + Walnut
1st Shade- Base + Deep Blue
    2nd Shade- Deep Blue

Both trousers and coat were done using the "sketch and blend" technique using the retarder as per the seminar we were at in June.

I hope to have this guy done in the next few days.

Thanks my dear friend! Helps a lot! (y)
    One single question:
All Scale 75 blue colours used, are from the Sky and Ice Blue paint Set?
    Cheers Bro,
    Zeno :)
