Added a bit of Mars Yellow as a base for the metal on his chin chain and started the dark blue plastron and collar.

Thanks for the comments gents. A bit more on the oak leaves but still lots to come. Started to decoration on his collar. Oils are particularly well suited to this. I try to use the same style that 2D portrait artists did during the Empire, indicating gold lace rather than painting ultra detail. I still need to highlight with unbleached titanium and perhaps a sparing use of white. Perhaps some shading with sepia or raw umber too.

Thanks Kevin. I still need to get Bogart right. I have Dorsenne on my list as well. Perhaps Poniatowski and Massena.

More lights and shadows on the face.

The face mix is my standard for oils. Got it from Phil Kessling on a previous discussion forum (HMF). Base is mars orange + cad yellow + cad red + white. Shadows are brown madder alizarin.

Still have to add coloured glazes.

Now all the intricate detail is coming out - Wow! Face looks fine - maybe some reddish glazes aroung nostrils and cheebones could be added but it is hard to tell if not seen in the flesh.

Lovely work Colin and very inspiring! It's great to see your work with your own choice of subject, your own choice of scale and of course your sculpting and painting style, not going with what is trendy or hot at the moment! As a fellow oil painter I can't but admire! Wonder what you'll do with Monsieur Lannes..... (y)
