Hey all,

Started a new fig this weekend... 54mm British infantryman during the Peninsular campaign manufactured by Beneito.

So far, he's still in the early stages. Red coat and white trousers are both pretty much done save some extensive weathering. Yellow facings and white turnbacks are just blocked. the shako is 90%, again weathering needed.
I left the face looking unshaven and tried for a "combat situation" look, keeping the eyes fairly wide... mind you they aren't quite so bug-eyed at normal magnification

Still lots to do. I will have him crossing a pile of rubble... breaching the wall.

Thanks guys, I do like the dynamic pose and have a bit of Spain roughed out for him to gamble about on.
I found the face to be somewhat plain, I hope I was able to get a somewhat wide eyed, battle terror expression out of an otherwise calm face.I may have to tinker with it some more, especially around the mouth.

I'm going to enjoy seeing this one progress. Get a copy of "Adventures with the Connaught Rangers" but William Gratton if you want a good read, this regiment did some amazing things.

From what I understand (and that's not much), the 88th was one of those "first in, last out" kind of regiments. Always in the muck.

Background info is always an interesting aspect of the hobby.

Trouble is I easily get distracted by the research aspect to the hobby and spend more time reading and getting the books out than actual time at the bench...

Hey all

Quick update...

Shako, facings, lace, cross belts, haversack, buttons have been worked on to varying degrees. Seeing the face blown up, I have to do a lot of reworking around the mouth and especially the eyes. Red will need some touching up, but I'll wait until everything around or on the coat is done... surely there will be more slips.


The base was cut on an angle and Magic Sculpt bricks, wood and loose debris were built up on the face of the angle cut. It's meant to represent the fall on the inside of a breach in a Spanish fortress wall... say, Busaco for instance. Our boy has passed the breach and is making his way down into the fort. In the bottom left corner, the exposed arm of an unlucky French defender, caught up and buried as the wall collapsed under the weight of British artillery. At this point the groundwork is simply base coated a mixture of Gold Brown and Sand Yellow. Further layers of various yellows, tans, browns will be added as washes and highlights.

Looks really good and I love the groundwork. My comment is the yellow looks too dark for the 88th - check the references.

I'm looking forward to seeing this figure develop.

You think I should take the facing colour a bit lighter? You're probably right but this is the only shade of yellow I know how to paint I will have to figure out a new recipe for yellow... that'll be hard



Ok I looked at the museum examples and yeah, that is a pretty pale yellow... I'll see what I can come up with.

Looking at my last post I said Busaco... I meant Badajoz, d-duh. No walls at Busaco, just a ridge.
