WIP Critique British para Arnhem 1944 - Verlinden - 120mm - WIP

    Hi All,

Happy to post an update on this Verlinden 120mm figure I am painting for a friend.
I am trying out some 'fast' techniques on this one, hoping to find ways to paint away the grey army before the turn of the next century. The finish is slightly rough I think, but I'm not unhappy about how things are progressing.

Upper part is almost done, except for details such as the para badge on his right arm, metal fittings and some general patching up. Next are equipment, trousers, boots and weapon. A few more weeks I'd say.

Most work is done with acrylics, but I used an oil stain on the Denison smock (that was the speeding-up effect I wanted to try).

Pictures have a slight yellow cast unfortunately, sorry about that; I didn't adjust the white balance....

Anyway, hope you like things so far. Any comment...let me know. Thanks!

    Cheers,
    Adrian

He's looking fantastic so far, Adrian, I love it. Can you explain how you used the oil stain? Did you still highlight and shade the camo with acrylics first?

Fantastic paint job. The oil stain technique sounds interesting (please more details) and the result is fine.

Wow! Best Denison paint I've seen in quite some time. In the hands of a skilled brushsmith, some of those old Verlindens still paint up nicely.

I'm not sure Edward, but some mentioned Julian Hullis(?) as the sculptor of this one.

    Here's what I did:

Painted the base colour (Vallejo English Uniform + Basic Skintone (roughly 50|50))
Highlighted and shaded that roughly (not too much work on blending, just a bit)

Painted the green (German Field Grey 830 plus touch of English Uniform) and red (Flat Brown 984 + Leather Brown + touch of English Uniform).

Painted the areas where red and green overlap. This is important for the look of the Denison. These areas form the darkest colour and I mixed it with Vallejo 984+830+black.

Without highlighting and shading the camouflage colours I applied a heavy coat of burnt umber (+touch of lamp black) all over, let that sit a few minutes, and removed it with dry broad brushes, leaving a uniform stain that darkens and harmonises all colours. I removed a bit more of the oils on the highlight areas by slightly wetting the removal brush with turpentine.

Let that dry for about 3 weeks.
Then airbrush matte varnish to kill the satin sheen of the oils. I use a turpentine-based household varnish.

Next highlighted and shaded all colours, including the base colour to revive the colours a bit. This is where I learned that not so much time was saved after all. I had hoped that a few touches would have been enough, but the highlighting and shading took almost as much time as in my standard approach. Ah well.

Finished by outlining the major features and seams.

    Hope this is useful.

    Cheers,
    Adrian

Great paint job. You have motivated me to dig out my Verlinden 120 pair of the Arnhem para carrying a wounded officer over his shoulder.

    Thank you Brian.

Hi Colin, That particular para pair was done by Chota Sahib and Verlinden in 1:35th as well. Three versions of this already and I'm still hoping Teasung of Alpine will do the ultimate 4th one..... :)

Also thanks for the Likes guys.

    Cheers,
