I,m not sure if it applied to the Life Guards but the heavy cavalry were ordered on the night before the battle to grind there swords on both edges so instead of a hatchet tip they were pointed hope this is of some interest

    Hi Pete,
As I understand it this was a general order to the Heavy Brigade en mass as it were. That said the only recorded evidence I have seen where it actually happened was from the RNBD. Oh and in the Sharp books of course.
I think that there is a high probability that in most of these directives it was some did and some didn't. Tough on the poor old cutlers I guess?
Sorry that this is no help at all:(.

Hello Pete, Thank you for your information on the heavy Cavalry sword. I have seen photos of both blades that were used at Waterloo, but I think I will keep my one for John Shaw as the issued British Heavy Cavalry sword rather than the pointed version.

"His first victim was a cuirassier whose face he sliced of as though it was a piece of apple".... "He then dispatched a further nine, getting around the problem of his sword being shorter by "smacking at their faces with the hilt. They'll either topple or turn". Which is what they did, and, when they turned they were beheaded"!

What a superb book Hill's The Life Guards via Horse Guards by Barney White-Spunner is. It's a bible for anyone interested in the Household Cavalry.
Cheers for the great post Martin.

A couple more progress shots. I decided to paint the face now to see how the sculpted expression would come up.I want to capture the intense moment when the Life Guards and John Shaw himself engage in combat with the French Cuirassiers.Hope you like him so far
