Hi!

Some advances on the red jacket and webbing.
Lost my patience with this carmesin red of British coats - really difficult to paint. Tried to fade the red color to give a worn apearence.
Next time I will finish the leather straps and rectify some parts as well improve other... and after do some weathering...

Pedro - Really nice work. I really like your red. It looks to be faded in the South African sun, just as it should. I would have dirtied him up with dust a bit more and perhaps gone for sweat under the arm pits but I like a more campaigny look. Helmet is spot on too.

About dirtiness, I will do but the figure 1st must to be attached to groundwork because is easy to find the right colours to combine to the terrain.
The sweat under the arm pits is a really cool idea but isn't be difficult to reproduced? Perhaps put a dilute dark red oil colour under his arm with some glossy effect?
Any idea?!

Pedro - I would use much darker colour of your base paint but not glossy....stay matte. Maybe some sweat down the middle of the back too.

There is a very small shade between sun faded red and pink. I think tat you have this colour tone perfectly .
I also think that to show the original scarlet red colour where the sun has not bleached the jacket will really finish off this fine soldier.

I think the fading would benefit in places from really diluted washes of orange, it looks a touch too pink in some areas. This may be better determined once weathered. As for under the armpits I agree with Colin, a darker colour but not glossy. Also it would benefit from some salt mark staining, probably a touch of off white and yellow, these guys lived in these jackets for months on end. Keep plugging away mate, it's coming together.

Just an aside - and this is meant as no criticism of this figure - I have noticed that there are several models out there of 24th Foot and other Zulu War figs that have FS helmets with only four panels sculpted on - Im fairly sure there were six panels?!

Looks great - this is a useful thread as I have embarked on a Rorkes Drift figure, I thought about the sweat marks as well and I intend to do the same - matt will be my choice and I also agree about highlights and orange even a hint of yellow on the tips might help. But you have done well with the red - and I do agre he will need dirtying a little - watching Zulu - the costumes were kept quite clean but in the more frenzied battle scenes the sweat under the arms is apparent (the actors didn't have shirts on!) on some which can give some ideas - and the actors also get dirtied up somewhat.

You nailed the helmet colours - and I feel your pain about red - such a tough colour to get right.

Keith, was terrible dificult to achieve this tone but in the end i´m happy with the result.

Richie, after the weathering and as you mentioned so well, I will decide if the jacket must have or not one last light with orange.

Steve, I think you are right about the helmet...but I I will leave it like that.

Very good so far. As said helmet colors are great. Regarding the sweat markings, I agree with everyone about using a darker red adding green to your base coat should work. Just use Google images, and I think you will get the idea.

I've been wanting to do this but not found the occasion yet...anyway, did some thinking about it and would go about it like this: As the others say start with a dark red and build up the stain in thin layers, avoiding too hard an edge. When the stain looks right I would use a little bit of semi gloss, well thinned, in some layers, to get just a tiny amount of shine, but avoid gloss. Use Google pics as a reference, as getting the shape right is key.
And to avoid stress: try it on an old figure first, not on this one!

The sweat on the red is going to be a bit of trial and error - I would say darker versions of the red you have used and by adding a touch of green or dark purple and the idea of a rime of salt as mentioned elsewhere here would be a great observation. But obviously subtlety will be the key. Not sure if satin or any sort of gloss will be right though - even on the real thing there is not much glistening going on - the material of those tunics will be thick and therefore absorb the gloss effect unless we are talking pools of sweat.

Great Work Pedro! Yes, the british red it's a bit tricky, but there are different ways to deal with it. I think you managed just fine
