Managed to get back to my den yesterday, made a start on the German, first thing was to apply 2 thin coats of GW Tallarn Flesh and once dry I painted in the eyes with acrylic colours again GW,the next stage was to basecoat the helmet, for this I used GW Mechanicus Grey mixed with a little black.
trench next stage 005.JPG trench next stage 006.JPG trench next stage 001.JPG trench next stage 002.JPG

Once the helmet was dry I added oil mixes of Black / umber / white to different shades and I applied them accordingly and blended, once this was complete and iadded a little shading with acrylic black around the helmet rim, following this up with applications of raw sienna to represent the mud and dirt,i also added small amounts of GW texture paint - Stirland mud, this is actually a texture paint which can also be used for dry brushing, however I don't like this technique so I just stippled it onto the helmet with an old brush,a lighter oil mix of raw Sienna and White was again stippled on to give different shades of the mud.

When the helmet had completely dried I will apply washes of GW Agrax Earthshade and Nulin Oil.

The basic flesh mix I used on this bust was Naples yellow + Veneitian Red,this was then lighted with more naples Yellow and titanium White for the lights and Burnt umber added for the shadow areas, some Cad red was added to the cheek areas very sparingly and blended in,also burnt umber + a little paynes grey was added to the flesh mix for the 5 o'clock shadow areas.

For the helmet strap I basecoated with Humbrol acrylic sand 63,once dry I added umber + burnt sienna for the main mix and lightened with yellow ochre for the lights,I never finish the flesh in one sitting so I will follow up todays work as I always feel some of the contrast gets lost overnight,so its just a case of re-instating the lights and shadows and any areas I might have missed first time.
I added the helmet with a piece of white tack just to see how it looked and for the purpose of these pictures.

    Hi Brian,
Thank you so much mate for taking the time to document this in the form of an SBS, I know how much extra it can add, but I'm sure we can all learn a few pointers from this one. Oh yes, nearly forgot, nice progress by the way.:) Hope you are well mate(y).

    That helmet is awesome.
Some rare mix for the face, but it turns out extremely well.
Gonna try this for my next one.
