Finally got round to opening the box on this figure. The figure is well balanced and not too many parts to assemble. [IMG] I have cleaned him up yet but looking forward to painting him.

Got my first Andrea metal figure through the post this weekend, lots of surface area needed cleaning up, quite pitted.

I read a tip somewhere where the writer mixes some Milliput and water to make a thin wash and uses that to fill pitting. I tried it with Vallejo putty and water to a thin paint consistency and it worked quite well, saves a lot of sanding in places where it is hard to get to without damaging other detail.

Not sure I like larger metal figures yet but this one looks quite good.

    Hi Graham
Sorry your introduction to Andrea figures hasn't gone so well. I've got a fair few from Andrea and to be honest they're isn't a bad one amongst them but I've had a few turkeys in the past from other figure stables so I understand were you are coming from :(

Regarding filling small pits I mix the liquid green stuff from Games Workshop to a thin consistency and that seems to work well for me.

Cheers and hope all goes well with you Andrea figure, btw 54mm is my preferred scale.

Quality of the metal does look very low grade ,I would not be to happy if I paid for this one.

Thanks for that tip Roy :). I think a lot of my disappointment with the figure is as much my expectations than anything else. Up to getting that figure, I had mostly got resin or plastic which tend to have a very smooth surface.

The other thing is this scale thing. The figure I have is boxed as 54mm but stands at least 65mm tall (making her well over 7 feet tall). It totally dwarfs a resin Wargriffon figure I have which measures in at about 53mm.

I am not having a go at Andrea as such. I actually got this figure as I had bought one of their painting DVDs which shows the figure painted from start to finish. Sadly the video didn't cover prepping the surface.

At the end of the day, figure painting like any modelling hobby involves some work and I don't mind that. I think the problem here is that I didn't have the skills to deal with it but I am learning as I go along. :)

    Hi Ron
Sorry but I don't have you knowledge regarding metal quality but to me it seemed no different from other metal figures I've bought from other metal figure manufactures. What should I be looking out for regarding a figures metal quality?
Any advice would be gratefully received cos I don't like wasting money.
    Cheers

You should be looking for clean casting and crisp detail and minimal pitting ,if the casting is very dull then it normally points to poor quality metal ,if it is bright then the mix is generally good , pay attention to straps belts and buckles for detail .
Have a look at metal models unpainted stuff and pegaso ,both top quality .

Rail prices are just shocking in this country , you can't run a railway totally private it needs to be subsidised

If you want to see well cast metal figures, try and get hold of an original Grieve or Poste Militaire figure (eBay?).

That well known phrase Ron "Made In China " , what can you do with a product made in a country where quality is swear word for company who only look at the profit margins and not the quality of their goods and then one day wonder why their sells are dropping . I haven't bought any Andrea kits for some time now as it's nearly £30 for a 54mm figure made in china , someone's taking the piss .

Ok men, i've got over 20 Andrea's miniatures painted, and i can say that is not the same and old reference or a ten years ago to today reference. If the metal and cast were bad, after the second reference bought, no more in my collection. (This happens to my with Knightmodels, for example. Shitty cast) The old cast of Andrea is bad (and miniatures cheapers) The other, is very good.
I have one or two references without paint or primer.
    I'll take photos to you

I haven't bought an Andrea figure in a long time (although I have 3 or 4 still in the stash, patiently awaiting their turn on the bench) and I was unaware that they were now made in China. Since when?

They've done some nice subjects, but to me they always seemed to lack the finesse of the likes of Pegaso or Romeo. Kind of "close - but no cigar".

David Grieve casting was second to none. I have three of his original Classic 100 series unstarted in the stash, and they are such things of beauty that it almost seems like a crime against metal to put paint & glue on them.

I can't bring myself to paint the few in my 'grey army' either.
