I am I right in my understanding that Austrian cavalry in WW1 went into battle in uniforms this colourful? This would make an excellent figure not all Khaki and field grey! Are there any Austrian cavalry figures on the Market?

    Hi Roger
Thanks for the link. I've got a couple of MM's bust figures but I am a bit nervous about buggering them up because flesh tones are something I struggle with :(

I have a set of 30mm flat figure Austrian Dragoons for 1900 but they weren't painted by me. However I was hoping there might have been some round figures available other than the TRADITION figures.

The painting I posted is by Alexander Pock an Austrian artist who's work was the subject of an exhibition at the National Army Museum in Vienna. I managed to buy a booklet from the museum (the text is not in English). Here are a few more

if anyone is interested in this period of the Austro-Hungarian Army I'd recommend the booklet as a uniform study.

I've probably got the same 30mm dragoons Roy. :D
Looks like you've found a gap in the market. There are some very interesting and colourful uniforms for the Austro-Hungarians c.1900 up to the Great War.
    Thanks for posting the pics.

    Hi Roger
I've already got these guys painted and in my display cabinet. Plus the comic Dragoon figure, which I must get round to painting!!

May be there is not much call for figures relating to the K.u.K. in larger scales which is such ashame because there's great subject material like these:

Unless others out there can put me right.

Roy - I did this 1/16th scale Ulan in 2010 - 2012 and Roger painted it (correct me if I'm wrong, Roger). It was a one-off for a collector. To the best of my knowledge there are no large scale kits of Austrian cavalry ca. 1914.

    All the best,
    Dan

To the other half of your question, whether the Austrians went to war in their colorful uniforms, you might find more info here:

    http://www.kuk-wehrmacht.de/regiment/index.html

I can't give a good answer, off the top of my head. I don't know if the Imperial and Royal army had begun implementing a drabber and therefore better camoflaging uniform, like the British and Germans had, at the time the war broke out. I thought that they had, but I haven't studied the k.und k. army as closely as I have other armies and periods.

    Prost!

Many thanks for the help and advice gents. Regarding figure manufactures I was hoping there might be an Austrian or Germany company producing good quality round figures, not everyone advertises on the interweb.

I've got flat figures in my collection for this period but would be nice to add some rounds [IMG]

Ooh very nice, I better start saving my pennies and check if there is any chance Mr Puchala will be at Euromilitare.

Unfortunately, I don't think Puchala has any fin-de-siecle k.u.k. figures in his catalog. Roger mentioned Hecker & Goros, and I also think of Tradition, if you don't mind buying "toy soldiers" instead of "connoisseur" figure kits. They have a page in their catalog for the Austrian-Hungarian army, 1900-1916.

This subject was also available in the custom figure catalog of Stadden sculpts, and you find the castings from time to time on eBay and at shows.

You might also want to look at Berliner Zinnfiguren, http://www.zinnfigur.com/, and see if any of the contemporary German round makers have any. Dolp comes to mind, possibly Peipp, too, though he focused more on Prussian and Saxon subjects.

    Hope that helps, prost!

    Hi Roy,
Are these of interest? 54mm from Metal Models - different nationality and bit off period but similar styles to what you are looking for (no mounted ones unfortunately)

Also the Funcken WW1 part2 book has some nice illustrations of different cavalry from the period although your sources seem to be even better.

@ Brad, hi many thanks for the pointers. I am not a big toy soldier style fan. I have painted 54mm figs in this style for others as per this picture but I prefer more detailed figures. [IMG]
The Dolp and Peipp sound interesting, I'll check to see if they have websites. I am not just looking for Austrian cavalry for WW1 and the lead up to the conflict, I have this Russian Cuirassier by El Infante [IMG]

hence why I am interested in the Puchala cavalry figures.

@ Mat, hi there, thanks for the pointers but I already have these in my collection. I posted the French Dragoon and Belgium Guide on my gallery. I've still to paint the German Hussar and Spahi by MM. I also have the 1870 Dragoon officer but that wasn't painted by me and to be honest i am thinking of removing the paint and painting it myself. Regarding the Spahi figure by MM personally I prefer the more colour JMD Spahi, plus I have JMD WW1 Polish Ulan officer. I know that's plenty to keep me busy for a while but there is always room for a few more figures.

Cheers and thanks again for the advice and tips.
    Roy
