Hi all,

Maybe a stupid question, but is cling wrap ok for covering finished areas of a figure to protect it from getting paint on them?

Just wanted to make sure before I did it incase it has some effect on the paint, and is it ok for acrylics and oils?

I use it over primer when painting acrylics. I would not use it over final painted acrylic as I think there would be a risk of friction shining or wearing the paint.

Try silly putty, don't know if you can get it in Aus, it's an American kids modelling putty, it doesn't leave any grease marks or affect the finish.

I've used Humrol Maskol. It can be applied with a brush and therefore (generally) goes where you want it to. As long as it's not left on too long, you ought not to have any problem with it. Other similar atrists' masking fluids will probably do the same job.

Oh, very importantly. IT'S NOT A STUPID QUESTION. That's not what this forum is about. If thought it was worth asking, then it's worth asking.

Just a quick heads up on Humbrol maskol.....I noticed when I bought and used maskol it had the same smell as Copydex glue which is many times cheaper than the very Small humbrol bottles of maskol so I bought a half litre bottle of Copydex and still use it now it's does exactly the same job except it doesn't have the lilac colour but apart from that is the same stuff.....has anyone else noticed this...Kevin

Jeff, if it's just a small area you wish to cover and paint up to I find plumbers tape ( the type used to make a waterproof seal on threaded plumbing fittings) very effective and cheap.
It stays on where you put it and comes off without any adverse effects at all.......great for getting a perfectly straight line.

We used to use silly putty to clean our M-16 rifles...pulled dirt out of the hard to reach places, left no residue...good stuff.

Never had a problem with cling film covering acrylics as long as they are dry

I have used a few times. No problem. But I didnt wrap it hard, and I used only acrylics. I think some colours and thinners might melt the plastic. Didnt leave it on for long either. And I used bluetac on the edges.
