Many years ago I purchased the Verlinden 1/5th scale bust of an English Longbowman sculpted by the late Derek Holmes,i began this bust but never got round to finishing the piece, recently I decided I wanted to try again but this time complete the project and add something to the piece itself.
I set out stripping back the undercoats I had used the first time round and with that and some cleaning up and priming I was ready to go.
The bust depicts an English Longbowman taking a French arrow in the right shoulder,it has been beautifully sculpted and the face really steals it for me,the bust has the National livery jacket with the Talbot Dog badge sculpted to the left breast area, the badge depicts The Talbot Hunting Dog which was the badge of Sir John Talbot Earl of Shrewsbury at the time of the siege at Castillon.
I wanted to add some tears to the clothing on the seams and other areas caused perhaps by wounds or just wear and for this I added areas of Milliput which after application was opened up with a scalpel knife and left to dry.
For the other extra additions I wanted to add part of a longbow across his back, this was made by drawing the intial design on a block of balsa and the piece being cut out, then the piece was sanded smooth, primed and painted and finished with 2x coats of satin varnish, the actual bow string was made from fuse wire.
For the arrow in his shoulder I decided on a broken arrow instead of the full one to depict perhaps the archer having broken it with his left hand after impact,i also added a small neck wound to depict a splinter of wood which may have hit him in the heat of battle.
The elbow patch was partly scrapped away and a piece of Milliput added to depict the patch coming loose from the main clothing, again it just gives something extra.
I also added an arrow case which I made out of Milliput and balsa plus some lead foil, archer's during the 100yrs war sometimes had self made cases or bags to carry the arrows and some just had them tucked inside their waistbelts,I copied a design similar from the osprey title English Longbowman,to frame the piece I went for a typical English design standard from the time, this was constructed from sheet brass to which I then added leadfoil, this was then primied and painted to suit.
The arrows were made from BBQ kebab sticks and sanded down to scale and the arrow feathers were made from plasticard.
The reason I went for the extra wear and tear on the clothing and the wounds is because the English suffered a terrible defeat to the French at Castillon and came under heavy attacks from French artillery during the siege,i wanted to give the bust that feeling of being in the heat of battle with the standard flying defiantly and all around were taking heavy casualties,i just have a few tweaks to the base here and there to complete to finish.
I hope my fellow friends and modelers enjoy the photos, any coments or criticism are always taken on board.
    Many thanks for looking,Happy Modeling

    Fantastic work!
There is just 1 point that could be improved (IMHO):
The pennant flaunts in a very rigid way, almost horizontaly and in parallel to the arm, so these two horizontal lines tend t0 create a sense of calm, bringing a feeling of peace & stability to the image. I think that changing just a little the direction of the flag you would achieve an even more dramatic scene. Anyway, a terrific work just as it is. Congratulations, Love it!

    Hi Brian,
Excellent transformation with the painting, weathering and additions, if you compare yours to the original (box art?), it's like the world cup winners versus Sunday league. Just love the way you portray a soldier in the field.
    cheers
