Playing catch up here but this is what I've done so far it umm doesn't look "quite" like Rogs  The shield still need tidying up a fair bit (Missus just HAD to tell me something while I was doing it  )

    They're good at that. :arghh:

Don't be afraid to go darker with your shading Steve, likewise pure white is good for the armour highlights.

I was talking to Davie Mitchell the other night about the leap of faith needed for us oil painters to go for a much more dramatic approach to transitions when tackling a flat. I have to say I find it surprisingly hard..

I'd to like to second what Ken said, another great tutorial Roger!

Steve - keep on with the flat figure painting, it will take a while to pick up but the practice will knock on to your painting of full round figures (it has a habit of developing a keen eye for light direction). I personally like what you've done with the paint job (y)

You're right Derek it is quite difficult to get your head round but the results speak for themselves. On the subject of oils, have you tried Transparent White by W&N? I've just got myself a tube with the notion I can get some strong highlights with it.

I've just clocked that I haven't put enough yellow bands on the shields
