    Hi Brian,

That's a stunning piece of painting mate. The check pattern on the hat is particularly detailed and symmetrical which is a testament to your skill and patience.

Brian ... I think you have done a great job on all the fabrics. My only comment is that you missed a bit of pattern under his collar. The base coat is showing. I would fix that I think.

I was wondering what was jarring a little in this for me Brian....it is the Inverness Cape, particularly the shoulder cape.
It's the way the vertical lines run almost as if towards a vanishing point in the neck.
The perspective created then forces the checks to become progressively smaller rather than being all the same size as woven. As below.
The only way around this I can think of is to paint in hems and match the panels along them.
Really looking forward to what you'll do when you add Watson.

Hi Del,its a challenge painting things like this, however ive now decided to strip what I can and re-paint,i wanted the cape to look similar in pattern to the deerstalker which in my first attempt comes no where near,in the picture you added it shows the cape collar the same as the cloak, this part I will leave as I don't want it all one colour, ive started working on it now anyway and ill update early next week.
Cant remember the last time I had to strip something and re-start it again, but I suppose it happens to all of us sometimes.

Hope youre keeping well anyway (y)

The problem with checks on this is that you don't have the pleating and folds that you get in a kilt so you can't hide anywhere with the pattern.
I think you're right about keeping the collar as a contrast. Brian S never strips but always just paints over. As you know his paintwork is spectacularly even and thin so he can get away with it.
