Completed Critique Roman Legionnaire - Soldiers - 54mm

    Hi All,

I managed to finish this figure recently, a Laruccia 54mm sculpt from Soldiers in white metal. It was intended as a simple & quick figure on which I wanted to try and speed up my painting, but, as so often, things turned out more complex than I thought.

The overcoat exposes part of the tunica so painting and construction were mixed up. Then the legs are largely in the shade and getting this to look right required some trial and error. And you may remember my 'journey' with the shield, which I painted twice...

Now that I have the pictures I note some minor things that need patching up, but I'm glad another one goes onto the 'finished' list! It's a nice figure and I enjoyed painting it.

    Hope you like it.

    Cheers,
    Adrian

Very nicely done...superb attention to detail.
Was always curious about this figure. Just what exactly is the context? No helmet, no shield cover, just what is he doing?

This is lovely(y). Did you hand paint the shield?

    Thanks Kevin.

He is walking just behind a donkey carrying all his other stuff, obviously..!!
Actually, I imagine this one doing some routine guard walking in friendly territory.

Thanks swralph. I hand painted the darn shield twice actually....

    Thanks Edward.

hahahaha!!! How many of us have been caught out like that at some point (don't all shout at once!)

Anyway cracking job Adrian. The shield in particular is beautiful. Wish I could freehand a design like that.

Super job. Nobody sculpts Romans like Laruccia and you have done a great job on painting him Adrian. Love the shield and groundwork especially.

A cracking job Adrian. Plenty of good things to say about it but like Brian says the cloak texture is outstanding. Particularly like the light touch at the hems and cuffs, just enough to show wear without too much tear. (y) Oh! and the face is top class.

Cracking brushwork Adrian. Textures are great and that shield is just amazing.....all the best things are done twice, ask the Chinese, twice fried pork springs to mind (y)

If I'm totally honest, I preferred your first shield with the subliminal message written on it ;)

    Cheers,
    Billy
