Starting my next bust. I was going to go WWI but caught the Napoleonic bug instead. I always liked the look and story of a General D'Hautpoul, mortally wounded in the great cavalry charge at Eylau. I also look forward to sculpting a cuirassier general's armour and helmet. Should be fun. Here are some research shots from the net and the start of his face.

Hello Colin, It will be interesting to see how you do D'Hautpoul's Armor and Hemet, its looks quite elaborate. Best of luck with this new project. Regards, SG:)

Here's a tip for you. Make a temporary hollow for the iris (look at some classical sculpture) because the eyes often capture the personality and bring a piece to life. You can fill it in again when finished for painting or casting, it will help especially as you're using a two dimensional portrait for reference. Once the eyes 'live' it will be easier to continue.

Thanks for the useful advice Zodiac. I sculpt eyes on a ball of magic sculpt so the only way to do that is to drill them. Not sure I am up for that. :)

Nice start... Maybe the nose might be a little more aquiline and wider nostrils, less pinched I guess.
Look forward to the armour and helmet.

Big challenge, the most famous General of "Cavalerie Lourde", (Heavy Cavalry), Napoleon was appointed Marshal of the Empire, had he not been killed in 1807 at Eylau.

    For the little history :
Napoleon had ordered that part of cannons captured at Eylau was used to cast a statue of General Hautpoul, wearing the uniform of the Cuirassiers, it was erected in Gaillac 29 June 1851 with bronze of 24 guns, but was overturned on May 22, 1942 order of the Vichy regime and then melted to support the Nazi war effort.

And if you do not know Gaillac, except now for the statue, Gaillac is also famous in France for is.....wine!:dead: That's France;) Wine, Food, Cheeses and Perfumes.
Where are the sculptors and painters of figurines ?:censored::whistle:

What a shame to melt that statue Zastrow....it was superb. Thanks for the picture. I didn't know D'Hautpoul was in line to be a Marshal...interesting. I'm not sure a bust will be that big a challenge...I wouldn''t like to try a mounted version but I know Metal Modeles does a nice one.

    Hi Colin,
Just an opinion. Looking at the 2nd picture of D'Hautpoul (in oval gold frame), his eyeballs seem to be spaced further apart than what you have sculpted.

Thanks Victor. Several have pointed that out as well as making the recurring eyes too small comment. I'm not changing them now as that would mean drilling out his eyes and an almost complete restart. Also, neither of the prints are particularly useful as they look like different men. I have used elements of both merged.

Here are some more resources I found and a few in progress shots. Get the nose on that dude!

    Hi Colin,
I didn't realise that you have made considerable progress on this bust. the latest pics are great and I agree with you that D'Hautpoul doesn't have obviously striking features. My only recollection of building him was based on a Historex kit. I think that this will be a striking bust with helmet and plume added.

    Better pictures of the face.

Next step the cuirassier helmet. I haven't decide to go with the swept back Minerva style or the classic dragoon design. Most pics of D'Hautpoul show the latter. I found this amazing 1804 Colonel's cuirass and helmet in one of my auction catalogues (4ieme Regiment). Not sure what it sold for but the estimate was in excess of $200,000. With the addition of the well known branch ornament to the chest, this should be a good pattern to use for D'Hautpoul at Eylau in 1807.

Much better line on the nose... Most of the plates show a rather generic 19th cen appearance so the nose is the most prominent feature. Also true hair chinscales and lowslung helmet peak leaves very little of the face open.

The helmet and armour will be a challenge but the payout at the end is more than worth it... I really dig the Cuirassier's uniform... a mixture of the ancient and the modern (for 1807 anyway;)).

Can't wait to see this in the flesh
