I've spent a week prepping this figure obtained at huge expense from a fellow planeteer.....!!

Now I'm chucking the paint on I thought you might like an SBS to see the technique. I'll try later today to get some of the wet oil shots but, I'm not sure how much reflection will spoil it. We'll see!

First shots are grey primer [Halfords Grey ] I removed part of the old rifle sling as it was distorted beyond reasonable tweaking. It also allowed me to make a clean joint putting the left arm on . I remade the sling from a Duro and Mlliput mix rolled out and cut into strips.

The 'piping' on the cuffs was reduced down to the cloth seams that were really present and made good with Magic Sculpt.

I prefer to paint a convex eyeball instead of the concavity present and filled them in with Milliput.

Ok, some shots of the figure airbrushed with Humbrol 104 blue, shaded with black sprayed from below and a lighter mix of the base from above. The face has had a simple acrylic mix of Andrea basic skin tone with Russian Green and Blue Grey. Some simple highlighting was done with more pale grey in the base mix.

These 65mm David Grieve figures were/are little gems. Many of them (but apparently not this marine) can still be obtained from Bonapartes (http://www.bonapartesmilitarymodels.co.uk/david-greives-65mm-15-c.asp).

Interesting! I developed this spraying technique well over 20 years ago and published it in an old issue of Military Modeller. I did it because my slow brush painting technique, which worked fine for 75mm and smaller figures, became absolutely painful when used on larger scale figures. I was doing some larger scale stuff and figured if I could get the bulk of the paint on by airbrush, then I could manage the detail painting by hand. It is interesting to me to see that this technique has finally caught on, while I have spent many years not painting at all.

Kinda makes me want to paint some more stuff!

Hi Mike,
I do it to visualise the high and low points and the final 'shape' I want the figure to have. It helps to give a lighter look to the shoulder areas and darker below. I'll cover it with oils as usual but, it's only a very thin oil layer, aiding the shading process.

I have this figure in my painted collection, one of the first figures I painted years ago in Humbrol, kinda makes me want to revisit him.
As Mike says this range of 65mm figures from David Greive's were first rate.

a friend of mine, sandy Lawson of Dundee model club did this figure years ago and did a great job of it, its good to see an old classic making a comeback./badger

Bit of a delay, 35 mile hilly bike ride then the white balance went crazy on the camera. Spent about two hours painting the webbing with Humbrols.................not a technique for me I've decided.

looking good so far David, the blue certainly looks good!
