Hi all, here are some photos of my latest piece the Alexandros 75mm Murmillo Gladiator.
It's one of these models that 'hooks' you in, it's not as sharply sculpted as for example Pegaso's Commodus....but it's a perfect balance between detail and 'look', the pose says it all.
All painted in oils with some metallic inks. The groundwork is surfaced with ground up pumice stone. I don't know if this is accurate or not but I've read that a lot of the construction of the Coliseum used pumice blocks, so I'm assuming that a lot of the 'sand' would contain pumice.
The roses are just some dried flowers from around the house and painted as red roses.
As usual I've noticed a few tweaks needed here and there.
I picked this up from Brian Snaddon and after stripping off the black primer dis-assembled it and cleaned it up.
Overall fit wasn't too bad although there were one or two gaps that needed some filling.
Nameplate made in my usual way. Lovely Purple Heartwood base from Ron Tamburrini

Thanks Carl and Pedro. I wish I could take better photos, there's a lot more subtlety than I can show.
This has been one of my favourite figures to work on from start to finish.

Excellent piece Del. Just the right balance throughout. Pumice is a very nice touch mate.

    Nice work Del.
Did it myself last year, and I agree with you about the fitting. Not good.

Turned out really nice Del, and a good touch with tucking the tiger tail in the belt.

Del, I think this is an excellent piece you have here. The picture of the rear of the figure really shows the vibrancy of the tiger skin.
The metals and flesh are all spot on and tie in great with the all tones of the reds.
The battered edges of the shield where it has been used as a weapon is a nice touch along with the bit of skullbone still sticking to it with blood.
The amount of detail and skill you've put into this piece just proves it was a real favourite of yours.

You've given this warrior a real attitude which has brought a large amount of realism to him.

Cheers Ron. The pumice stone was a used one I borrowed from the old lady next door ;) Seriously cost about a £1 from Tesco. Just a case of scraping with the edge of a knife and sprinkling over PVA. Other advantage over sand is the ease with which it takes up colour.

Well worth the effort though. It was yours that attracted me to this model (y)

Thanks Grant. It was a challenge where to stop. Temptation was to go overboard representing the wear and tear of the arena.
It's a figure that IMO has to be painted post combat, doesn't work as a 'clean' job.

Thanks Pedro...next up is a 75mm Secutor, 75mm Commodus and a Murmillo bust, all Pegaso.

The thing I notice Del is your own distinct style in painting....no hard edges or black outlining. Everything blends, transitions and works. Accurate or not, the pumice is a great idea to add to the groundwork tool box.cool label too.

Nice work Del. Well painted, nice piece.
Where I live pumice arrives on almost every high tide and I use it in groundwork all the time,....goes well with Cream of Tartar.

Thanks Colin. I think I've settled on a kind of 'style' that suits me and I'm perfectly happy with.
The labels a dawdle to do and if you haven't seen it there's a SBS in the Articles section.
