    Hi Wayne,
Thanks mate, I'm gald this is being of some use to you.:)
This is the way I do mine, other people will have there own methods and mixes and you will probably find what is right for you.
My base coat for the tunics in acrylics is always Vallejo Vermillion and Reaper Clotted Red, to lighten I then use thin washes of the Vermillion first to the parts I want to lighten. Then to this I add a tip of Vallejo light orange and again very thin washes over the same areas. The final coat is the light orange on it's own and this is really thinned down, should be just like a tinged water, again built up with many washes until I get the desired effect.
Sometimes if the blending or tones need to be altered I may go over certain areas again but in oils, again using similar colours and the final layers in thinned oil glazes.
I remember on my bust I also dry brushed the creases etc this helped give it a an even more worn and toned down look.

Hope this helps, if you need anything else just ask mate.
    cheers
    Richie

    Hi Tom,
Thanks mate, I think I'm going to ask my bother-in-law to show me how to use a photo package so I can drop a figure in the actual picture and not just stood in front.
If I can learn how to do this, as soon as I have 12 pieces finished I could find appropriate backdrops and make myself a Zulu War calendar:)
    cheers

    Hi Rich,

Sorry for the delay in not answering sooner as I have been away sunning myself  When I first posted this figure in the sculpt section I thought I know just the man ;) I am so pleased that it has provided you with such enjoyment and you have given everybody not only a fascinating insight into the history of that battle and some of the personalities who fought there, but also a great breakdown of the construction and technique used to assemble and paint the figure. It takes a lot of time and dedication to post sbs threads for all of us to enjoy and learn from, well done Rich and thank you for the very generous comments you have given the figure. (y) Looking forward to seeing your progress to completion.

Thank you very much for the very nice comments, it has been a pleasure working on this. I intend to get stuck in this weekend and have him completed. Only one problem!...........he has no comrades! as

"The sentries report Zulus to the south west. Thousands of them". :ROFLMAO:

    Hi All,
I finally finished this wonderful figure of a 2nd Warwickshire Corporal of the 24th Regt. of Foot at Rorke's Drift from Imperial Gallery. I have fitted the bayonet, done a little bit more painting, weathered him appropriate for battle and based him up.

I pondered for quite a while over the name plate for this figure and though it apt that I should title it "Sell our lives like soldiers"..... as this was part of the quote given by Corporal Lyons to the Cambrian in 1879. "Everyman fought dearly for his life, but we were all determined to sell our lives like soldiers, and keep up the credit of our regiment".

I think personally I have done myself proud with this one, it was a real joy to do. I hope I have made a good effort and done you all proud and thanks to everyone of you for looking in and more importantly joining in. As equally important I hope I have done Rob and Imperial Gallery proud, for without him putting his trust and faith in me I would not have had the pleasure of doing this thread.

I salute you and doff my foreign service helmet to you all and especially to my wife who was abandoned for 6 days whilst I was in the redoubt.(y)
    cheers
