If for the helmet first coat, you tried to mix Raw Umber with the Burnt Sienna would that give the same sort of effect. Just a little Raw Umber of coarse.
Great job so far. Think I will use your ideas for my Drummer Boy if you dont object.

Hi Carl,
I'm off work mate so make hay while I have the light. There have been a few choice words flying around my conservatory today, my standard of swearing has improved no end doing those straps......saying that they are nicely done with some real nice detail, laying down white is not the best colour. Infact if I get another I think I will spray it white and paint the red in.

I have managed to push this on a little bit further, I'm now pleased with helmet after adjusting a few bits so I'm leaving it. I've been working on the face I have tried to simulate a powder stain on the face, still need to adjust a few things on the face going slow but moving OK . I painted the Martini Henry and stained all the white straps and belts, just might adjust some of the tones here and there. Painted all the metal areas black ready for a coat of brass, then onto the tunic.

Hello mate, that's moving at a fair old pace. Just keeps getting better and better. Really like where your going with this.
If I may suggest, try a little 'graphite' on the rifle metals, as this will lift them out of the gorgeous woodwork you have done.
Seeing what you have done is very inspiring Richie, so I will be giving this one a go mate.

I think I have seen this in other posts! Do I just need to use a normal HB pencil? Or do I need something softer like a 5B or harder like a 3H? I presume I just use it in the extreme edges? Sorry to reply questions I have not done this before. Glad you inspired and are going to give this one a go, you will really enjoy it.

Hi mate, tip is, for edges only use a harder grade, for larger areas a softer one. Trick with using soft grades on larger areas, is to apply it with your finger or a cotton bud. This will 'buff' it at the same time.

If your happy mate, then all good to me. You can cleanly remove the excess with a soft brush dampened in white spirit, as long as the paint is dry.

Hi All,
I have finally fixed the head, arms and rifle to the figure. I have also painted all the equipment and attached this also, I have the bayonet still to remove from the casting block but this will be the last thing to do when the figure is finally complete. I have also decided to mount the figure on the base and added a touch more groundwork dirt.
I have pushed the painting on quite a lot, but I'm going to leave it for a few days for the oils to dry out. When dry I will look at adjusting some more of the tones on the tunic especially, I may want an even more bleached look, I will then need to paint in some of the finer details and weather him appropriately for the battle.

Apologies for the poor photo's, the tunic looks washed out I can assure you there are lots of different tones on the tunic
