They used to wear the cuirass when commanding heavy cavalry division.

Let's go ... I started painting the horse. I choosed a chestnut.

As first step I washed the entire horse with a diluted oil wash on the primer. The palette fit thus horse is made with
Burnt umber
Raw umber
Burnt sienna
Mars orange
Mars yellow
Naples yellow
A bit of white and some Blu for the deepest shadows



After drying I painted in oils not using any thinner and with a flat brush

Lights has been added progressively on the fresh color melting them with soft dry brush

Nice Technique ,interesting to note you thinned your first coat,what base undercoat did you use Ivo

I've used a grey spray normally available for car repairing

What no base coat just primer ?

the washing become the base coat, it's the same.

there isn't any obligation to use an acrilic base coat we can paint also over the primer

That's a good one. I did it now and then and didn't notice no difference.
As many of oilpainters undercoat with Humbrol or acrylic paint ( i do because they told me to do) it is unessasery.
How many time's you paint the basecoat before it covered the primer??

saddle has been painted in oils with some purple red + black and highest higlight in cadmium red

Lovely shade of red and I really like the gold work (something I always struggle with).
Did you sculpt the rosette at the top of the bridle cheek strap or is it like a Historex spare part?
