While waiting for pieces and parts to dry and whatnot, I picked up a bunch of Jo Sonja tube acrylics. I have been wanting to experiment with them ---- based on other artists use. So I started by painting the face on this bust. It's Walter Von Geroldseck, the Bishop of Strasbourg, 1262. It's a 1/10 scale piece made by a Russian chap. there is a thread here on PF about the original scuplt.

So, the face started with the painting of the eyes, then the flesh. I used Vallejo's for the eyes. The face is about 90% complete- some areas still to work on. But it's about 99% painted with Jo Sonja. Since this acrylic is like artists oils, I used the standard flesh mixes you would use for oils. I think this stuff is great- its easy to blend and more fluid than Vallejo. As I progress, I will fine tune my technique. Thanks for looking-

Great work with this face, Bigdaddy. In my opinion the texture of the original cast, seems quite rough, comparing wih other busts. What you think?

Yes. it is. It's not the quality of Young Miniatures or Life Miniatures, etc. I had to repair several areas and it looks like some of the resin was not mixed well. The sculptor could of spent some time refining the piece before casting. But, the concept is good. I probably would not of purchased this based on closer inspection- I like to paint; not fix bad castings or poor sculpts, but it is a commission piece. I think in the end it will be a great bust.

Have to say maybe I was lucky or because it was an early cast ( 5 or 7 as I recall) but mine is an excellent casting no problems at all there

its up to artist to make it work and rescue a poor sculpt, especially if its a commission IMHO (please dont take it as an attack).
I think you did rather well, in fact first image of primed head made me worried, but painted face looks ace. I read somewhere that you can disolve old bits of resin in acetone and then brush the substance onto the model - that could have filled the defects?

All Fex'es sculpts are a little rough, but Bishop I got seems in a reasonably better nick. You need to remember though that its not produced by giants like Alexandros (got few busts recently - blown away by quality) and Youngs who's castings are like master models themeselves ( hense so favoured by pirates).

Cant wait to see how you will tackle the colours and armour, as got Walter lined up myself.

I worked on the face, hair, armor and mail........... Looks better than the black primer..
