    Oh, no:facepalm: Another male bust.....:depressed:

I can understand that German busts sell, can understand manly square jaw, but why male all the time??? And whilst we are at it, why human?

I am really fed up with this, I wish Mr Song listened for once

Listened to what? Any creative individual who listens and does what other people want has thrown away all the enjoyment that comes from creating. It has to be a subject that you enjoy;otherwise it's hard to put your whole heart into it.I commend Mr.Song for sticking to what he knows and loves to do.I think we should all appeciate his work;both in sculpture,AND painting. He's a one man army.
And personally;I am tired of all the BS and(Yawns),that come with his work.....My advice would be.............If you can do better..Do it....................Just an opinion by a simple.????

Gaudin - you crack me up.

I should probably stay out because I don't get bust at all, but this is a community and I choose to participate.

I get it. Some people don't like wwII subjects. And they don't like I guess a certain repetitive style. (Think about how odd that sounds -repetitive style. Kind of redundant isn't it. Think about it). But why do these comments always come up with Young. I can think of another example like this with another manufacturer, but I will get to that.

Why do comments like this not come up with Tommy's War and WWI, or Bravo-6 and Vietnam, or Alpine and WWII? Is it because they are not bust or something. I really don't understand and I am tyring to. I am fairly new, but did Young state he was covering the entire realm of history or something and other manufactures haven't. Companies do Napoleonics and I don't see, "oh another Napoleonic" (although I am thinking it - just kidding).

I admit I thought this bust was very similar to the Lrdg figure (oops mean bust) at first. It's really just the hat though. I think the post above showed that the face really isn't that similar (nice job on that post dude). It is in a certain style and I think I already talked about that, where style is a virtue and repetition is a vice.

So the other manufacturer called out for something and it felt like people were piling on was with respect to figures that were posed pointing (not too much a concern with busts). I kept seeing people repeating these comments over and over. Years afterwards the very unoriginal people were still making comments everytime this company released new figures saying great the figures aren't pointing. I really felt people were piling on. Seems like the case here.

Here's the point. If you want Young to do something different and make your voice heard in the market place how about telling him what you would like to see from him like a Napoleonic, or dystopic, or a sci-fi, or what ever trips your trigger.

Of course you should be able to give negative critism. I don't think anyone would want it any other way. Try and be consistent with your critism though and not pile on certain folks. And maybe be a little more illuminating on why you don't like something or what you would rather see. May require a little thought if you can muster it.

The repetitive faces comments may just come down to style and I think is magnified because of the face being the focal point of the bust - there really isn't that much else to a bust is there. Isn't that the point.

Mike Good - I don't know how to say this, but you have the deepest insights about sculpting which is really cool to read, so thanks for that.

I think it's great. Bears more than a passing resemblance to a young
Robert Shaw ( The Sting, Jaws, From Russia With Love )...which works
    for me.

I guess I haven't painted enough faces to be bored yet....

    Hi Phil and Wayne

What you just said is exactly my sentiment. My post above was meant to take it to next level of absurdity of advising established manufacturer what to do. Like, for example, fairies may be...

Of course Young will continue doing what they do and will remain successfull, regardless of 2-3 (5-10) people dont like. There is a good russian proverb to that regard- something along the line "The dogs are barking, but caravan train continues to move".

Wayne - there is no tracks to cover.
So like I said earlier, read between the lines.

Welcome to pF! You must be new here.
Alpine gets a healthy dose of FlaK...

When you sculpt for a long time, you will develop a style.
My goal is not to develop a style in sculpting... but I do have one.
Let's remember it is all manual work. Sculpting totally different
faces is not easy as one might imagine.

My point I think is you don't get flak because of the genre you produce. You may have gotten flak for other things like the pointing figures, but I don't think anyone expects Alpine to put out a Viking or something other than WWII which seems to be the case here.

Your comments about style are exactly what I am trying to say. To have a style is a virtue, but repetition is a vice. Seems like that would be a razors edge and a very hard thing to balance given the complexity of any creative process.

No one pointed out yet that interestingly ( with minor exception, say hastings knight or gladiator) all Young's non WW1-2 faces look quite fresh and different in comparison, including fantasy
So he must have some sort of 20th century subtype

I still stand by my original post....But yes;...You are right;......I didn't read between the lines.

What difference would that make? You don't have to be able to do as well, or better, in fact it's not like being able to sculpt at all is a requirement to post negative comments, any more than it is to post positive ones.

The point, for me at least, is he can do better.

Good question, easy answer: because he doesn't post them himself. The producers who post their own stuff, both here and elsewhere, are largely shielded from negative commentary on their work, for the obvious reasons. It's perfectly natural that this occurs, but it should always be borne in mind.

You sure about that? Because there are certainly a number of people here, including a couple who have posted above, where it's quite clear that's exactly what they want.

Personally...and as an owner of 10+ Young busts....I would love to see Young take his awesome skills
and push out in another direction. Busts that I would buy if they were to his standard:
    - Fantasy Dragon
    - Captain Hook
    - Robin Hood
    - Sherlock Holmes
    - Cyrano deBergerac (sp?)
    - Merlin
    - Hardboiled 1930's Detective
    - Educated Guess at a realistic 22nd century Combat Soldier or SWAT team member
    - Conan the Barbarian
    - The Joker
    - Musketeer
    - Any number of Johnny Depp characters
    - A Fantasy Brute Ogre
    - A Fantasy Dwarf
    - Tom Cruise & Ken Watanabe - Samurai
    - Robert Redford - Jeremiah Johnson
    - Robert Redford & Paul Newman - The Sting or Butch and Sundance
    - Sean Connery - TMWWBK or The Wind and the Lion
    - Clint Eastwood - Any Spaghetti Western
    - Peter O'Toole - Lawrence of Arabia
    - Robert Shaw - Quint from Jaws
    - Harrison Ford - Indiana Jones ( when still young )
    - Anthony Hopkins - Silence of the Lambs
    - Daniel Day Lewis - Lincoln or Gangs of New York
    - Vin Diesel - Riddick
    - Hugh Jackman - Jean Valjean
    - Kevin Costner - Lt. Dunbar (Sioux attire ) - Dances with Wolves

Definitely....Sharon Stone - The Quick and the Dead
Sigourney Weaver - Aliens ( not Alien )
    Kate Beckinsale - Underworld

Wow - I guess I am getting carried away here.....

If I could have just one of these.....Last Samurai ( One of my favorite movies )

better still.....Sean Connery as Captain Ramius from Hunt for Red October.
    That's the one !

Maybe we could pull this thread in a more positive direction.........

I'd love to hear other ideas...who knows who might be reading this.....

Personally, I think the Young busts are fantastic, each one is a wonderful piece with great character. I do, however, think that everyone is entitled to their opinion.

As manufacturers we have the choice to listen to comments, or not. We're never going to please everyone. Every time I release figures I get comments about doing different scales. I get email after email asking me to cover different regiments, pilots or other nationalities. I even get people sending me pictures of their Grandad or great Grandad in World War One uniform and asking me to release a figure of that particular person. It isn't always viable to do that 'one-off' that modellers sometimes have in mind.

Simply put, you can't please everyone, so you try your best and produce something that pleases as many as possible. The final say is down to the customer, who either buys the product or don't.

I suspect that Young Miniatures have many, many customers who are very satisfied with what they are doing.

Another great bust, I've never bought a Young Miniatures before, but I suspect it won't be long before I do. (y)

Not another great bust, one after another. Why does he do all these great busts.
He really needs to do some really crap ones or add bits and bobs from his other busts to make a shocker. You know like what has happened to Verlinden figures.................god what has happened there. Its like lets take a great company and turn it upside down and sell mix and match crap figures. Now thats a company to shout about.
Don't worry Young its hard being on top as everyone is looking at you and what you do. No one whinges about a crap company because they all expect crap
