Hello Folks,
I would like to share with you my current efforts to add the lower body parts to Pete Morton's great sculpt of an Officer of the 7th Regiment of Foot, The Royal Fusiliers.
The conversion is constructed from Milliput (standard) and plastic card on a framework made from a wire coat hanger. the drum is the center roll from a Christmas ribbon.
I hope that you can see what I am trying to achieve here.

Another great bit of sculpting on your part mate, definitely a stance with lots of defiant attitude - full of bravado. Looks well balanced too. The drum looks really neat. Have you painted the coat of arms on the drum????

thanks for looking in and making such positive comments, praise indeed coming from you stallwerts.
Richie, I tried to get a 'classic heroic pose,' by slightly leaning forward. The only thing I can't set my mind to is having him resting his foot on a drum of his own Regiment. The drums were treated almost the same as the Colours, so he most likely would not have stood on one? What do you chaps think?
The drum is made from the info you gave me and I think it works well. The crest is not fixed to the drum shell at the moment but it is an overpainted drawing of George III's coat of arms. So at this stage a little cheating but if I keep the drum idea I may paint it in the same vein.

So pleased that you like the conversion I will update soon.

Thanks for interrupting your wine drinking time to take a second muse over this fellow. I will take your point and keep the drum in the piece. My caution was due to having just read an old book, The Drum by Huge Barty-King, where he details the original uses of drums and drummers. Although they were invariably no more than children, besides sounding calls and instructions, there was also the requirement that they spoke several languages. This was so that they could parley with the enemies and were often captured or worse in carrying out this task. Hence these boys and their drums, bugles etc. were held in very high esteem.
That’s enough history for one day.

Hello Guys,
Just put on a photo showing the progress on my Royal Fusiliers 'extension'.
Unfortunately I had to remove the left hand upper shoulder stump and re work the complete arm. I could not get the arm to flow well on the original shoulder.There is still a lot of work to be done on the left hand and arm but it hopefully it will give some idea of where I am going with this.

I think that I am ready to call it a day with the coat tails once I have engraved the seam lines.

Many thanks for following my progress on this figure, I am really enjoying this addition. Usually I come up against some kind of mental block and it sits on the shelf for a while until I think of how to get over the smallest of detail. With this great figure it has just flowed very smoothly all of the way.
I am pleased that our research matches up; I used Carl Franklin's revised edition of British Napoleonic Uniforms. I rate this as the best detailed book I have ever seen on this subject.

Thanks for your positive comments, they are very encouraging and most appreciated. Yes, there is not too much more to do before I start painting. I looked a number of images of GR III gorgets and foolishly am trying to change the design slightly……big mistake. Once this is done I will clear away the dust and debris and start painting. Really looking forward to seeing it in the scarlet coatee. I will SBS the painting of this fine fellow, though I am not as diciplined as others here.....I was brought up to have a different colour shade on your brush every time you load it with paint. Hence it's difficult to put much more than the very base colour mix but I will try.
I am gobsmacked that you do not have any of the great pieces that you have sculpted. Do you have any desire to get back and paint again?

I have a good number of Vin Rouge bottles with your name on them. So fly yourself (and any family) down to Limouges and I will meet you there. You are always welcome.

Sorry to hear about the gorget-I would send you a new one but it's not my call anymore!
I would say that Gordon would though, he's a good bloke!
I saw a painted version of the full figure on mm.com and he had done a good job with the painting
so get cracking and brushes out mate! lol!
I think that I would have a collection of painted figures if I had the patience to paint them but once I have finished sculpting them I have had enough!
I think that's why it's much more interesting to follow what you have done (and are doing) much later-if that makes sense!

and save some of that vino for me lol!
