Interesting that JW Wagstaff served and then returned to work at the Company. I wonder if he was the bosses son?

I wonder too if any of the descendents of these men would be interested in seeing this plaque?

A great piece of history Colin. I'm glad you saved it from the smelter.

Based on the census info found on GWF, it appears that he was the boss's son and that he served in the ranks.

Thanks Tony. The general consensus here and there is that this was not in fact my silliest purchase ever. :)

I think that is an amazing find Colin, certainly not the silliest purchase ever.

Coincidentally, I wrote the brief for two future Tommy's War releases this weekend and one of them is going to be a Canadian. I've been researching the Canadian army of the period and its fascinating. There are some interesting uniform details including the MacAdam shovel, which would have been amusing if it hadn't been such a serious botch.

It doesn't take away from the bravery of the Canadian troops though, or their huge sacrifice.

Found this material from the "Brown binders" - I lucked out as they are only extant up to the mid "S's."Excellent work by Libraries and Archives Canada in digitising this material and making it public at no charge!

I think JF Duffy is the more likely of the two Duffys as he joined up in Alvinston ON (nearish Hamilton) while the other J Duffy joined at Valcartier QC. Also JF Duffy's stated job as farmer more closely fits the nature of the Wagstaffe preserves business than J. Duffy's as slate cutter. The fun of research!

Interesting that Shearman was killed by an aircraft dropped bomb too.

OK that's all from me on this as I am at risk of beating a dead horse :)

I perfectly understand what you have done.. sometime for no reason, I buy strange thinks.... Old Caco Calo bottle, old negative picture on glass, a sign in copper telling " ... please don't touch the reverend organ ... " coming form a church, a maquette boat of Jaws

Cool Jaws scene - I probably would have bought that too!. Have you been tempted to repaint it?
