I dont normally post things in progress as most of my figures are always complete when i post on here, but i thought i would like to to share a small project i'm undertaking at present,i recently picked up the new Alexandros Models 200mm bust depicting Vasily Zaitsev at the battle of stalingrad in 1942,the sculpture is in fact based on the actor Jude Law who played Vasily in the movie Enemy at the Gates and it is a very good likeness to the actor.
I'm always looking for a different angle when it comes to busts and i did'nt want to portray this bust alone but wanted to add something extra,i watched the movie again and decided to opt for a backdrop of a section of room perhaps from a ruined building.
I started of by assembling the bust and postitioning some pieces of card and polystyrene which would resemble the walls and rubble to get the right compostition i was looking for, once i was happy with the layout i set about cutting the wall shapes from 15mm thick chip board, once the 2x wall shapes were cut i first pinned them together with piano wire and then glued them together using 5 min epoxy resin,i also added a small section of ceiling which will be added later in the project.
As this is a bust i wanted to create the impression that he was perhaps crouched or in a kneeling postion behind a large fall of rubble,to build the rubble up to the waist of the bust i shaped and positioned a piece of polystyrene which the bust would sit in,using polystyrene also helps me build the basic shape of the rubble up to which i will add polyfilla and brick / concrete at a later stage.
I postioned the wall section and polystyrene on the wood base and glued these into position.
I then set about creating the brickwork onto the wall sections, for this i opted for Milliput (Standard Type),i applied the milliput to the 2 wall sections (Interior Side) and smoothed out and left to cure for about 30min,just as the milliput starts to cure i sculpted the brick work with a sharp sculpting tool and smoothed with an old paintbrush as i worked dipped in water,i did'nt sculpt bricks all over as i wanted to create the effect of some of the wall plaster still intact.
I have added some photo's of this first stage, coments and critisim are always welcome,i also plan to add brick work to the exterior walls but this will come a a later stage.

Hello Brian, Very interesting concept with this display. Did you consider doing a shadow-box? Your mock-up drawings reminded me of this. Just wondering? Looks really good so far. Will follow this one. Regards, SG(y)

I've now managed to seat the bust into the rubble for its first dry run,i will need to add some small amounts of rubble once the bust is finished,i've secured the right arm and temporary secured the rifle with blue tac, pieces of wood have been added also and part of the broken window frame,i still have some gaps to fill once all the milliput is totaly cured,i will add accete window glass later and the exterior brickwork.
In the movie Jude Law (Vasily) is seen several times crawling through rubble into his sniping position,as this is a bust i wanted to depict him just above the rubble and debris giving the impression he's just crawled up into his attack position, intially i was going to position him behind a wall but opted for the rubble scenario as most of the buildings in stalingrad were decimated and bombed out. part 2 009.JPG part 2 010.JPG part 2 001.JPG part 2 003.JPG part 2 004.JPG part 2 005.JPG part 2 006.JPG part 2 007.JPG part 2 008.JPG

Ok, now I can where you go, and it is very well thought and very well executed! The detail of the hole on the ceiling was really well placed, in order to give some light to the figure ;)
All the rubble is very well done and placed, it all feels very natural indeed! and nothing seems out of proportion.
I only have one reservation, I looks like vasily is burried in the rubble, of course I know isn't possible to do another way, and the idea is to make an environment for the figure/bust, so to that end is extremely well done. As I'm not a purist for me isn't a big problem, and I think the whole idea of an art piece is not necesserly put reality as it really is. What matter is the feeling it gives, and I guess that this piece alltogether has tons of feeling. ;)
    My humble opinion.

Hi pedro,i understand what your'e saying about being buried in the rubble,i wanted to create a scene where he's within the debris, and as a sniper he would have had to make the most of this cover and that was the feeling i got from the movie,i felt this was the only way i could portray the bust,i'm happy with the way it looks so far but fully understand your point and value your opinion.
