Tried emailing him for a quote but didn't get a reply. Got any other printers that are good and will communicate with you.

    Tim,
It takes a while, but I finally got a response. But he could not answer my critical question about layer dimensions and minimum detail level,,, or at least, he hasn't responded to them.

I found a local one to me too. I have sent them a request for information but they appear to do mainly oil field prototypes. I'll post back what I find.

Thanks for the info. I am in the US.

Be great to have a local shop do it. If I ever win the lotto or make any money I'm going to have to invest in one of these printers.

Nick from 3D Print was up at Scale Model World, Telford with a stand last year and I had quite a chat with him. The stuff he'd got there looked pretty good and he can do the design work as well.

Yes I run an engineering design consultancy along with the Sphere stuff which is the manufacturing part of the company. We've got a Rapman, build-it-yourself 3D printer which we use to create rough prototypes. It can be a bit un-reliable though as the thermocouple in the extrusion head is a bit fragile. It's a great talking point at shows though :)
If we need RP components to a good quality then we do outsource to 'boutiques' like 3D Print or 3D Creation LAB; www.3dcreationlab.co.uk
I'm currently CAD modelling some artillery pieces with the intention of getting RP masters for resin casting .

You could also get em cheaper http://store.solidoodle.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=59&product_id=56 for around about 600 bucks you can get a single extrusion machine with a 6x6x6 bed (3" shorter than the 1700 USD makerbot and 1 print head shy).
Both makerbot and this one print at .3mm layer thickness,,, which IMHO isn't very detailed at all and will leave a lot of extrusion lines..... but if I was going from medium quality prints, I would get the cheaper machine which at 600 bucks is totally covered and includes feeder spools.
The makerbot is open, and the second extrusion head doesn't speed up the process, but allows you to use different colors and materials. Not worth 1100 USD more in my opinion.

If they ever go down to 5k I'm going to have to find a way to buy one. The applications are endless. I do a lot of scale modeling and it would be great to have one at my disposal to print out parts for models when ever I needed. The cool thing is the ability to scale that print if differently for casting in resin or in metal.
