Thanks to all the great help here on PF, I think I'm finally getting the hang of this. Lots to do yet, but thought you'd like to see how it's coming so far. I'm really enjoying this hobby; you guys rock(y)
Sorry for the dim light, shot in early daylight before I had to go to work.

You didn't hang around with this Mary.
The black looks very convincing. I would have painted the belts lighter, but that's a personal thing.
Glad you enjoyed it, and it shows,

Coming along great Mary. I agree with Carl, lighter belts for more contrast would improve it immensely I think. But if you're happy that's the main thing.

still working on the belt, boys. You're right, it looks better lighter, but the mix is tricky for me so it doesn't look like dollar-store shoe leather:D:D
Also, his face turned out much better than shows in these pix!

He's looking great so far, Mary. You may just motivate me to finish my own copy. Very well done.

coming along well, certainly has a sand blasted and weathered look. Looking at the lighting options I think this guy could look good lit from above and from a sand glare, I see him standing under the hot desert sun. This would mean you'd be able to put in some strong contrast in the tabbard and some glint in the chainmail if you wanted to add more interest to the subject.

    That look really nice.

How did you manage to paint the cross on him?

I did it freehand; a little at a time across the folds. Would be better with a stencil.

Very well done... black is always hard to pull off convincingly.

Very nice painting with one of the trickest color of all. (oke, white to)

Mary, as Megroot said, outstanding job with one of the trickiest colours around. In all my years as a figure modeller, I only painted black twice and I must say it does not look as near as good compared to your results. (y)

Well, I'm happy to share what I did...(oil paints, btw)
I mixed burnt umber and ivory black until the base colour was a very dark brown/black. I wasn't sure what the result would be, but with deep pure black shadows, it popped. The highlights are two mixes; a flesh tone mix and another of burnt umber and white until I had a very light beige.
It all came together thanks to PF:)
