It is a superbe figure Davide. Unfortunately, the 5eme hussards only had THREE rows of buttons on the pelisse like most of the other 'vielle corps' de hussards. The other regiments had the more commonly depicted FIVE rows of buttons. Perhaps you need to check on your sources. A good work on Le Cavalrie Legere is that by Michel Petard et RIGO. Bon chance!

Right. Surely, the source that Jay based his comment is Rousselot, but is clear that depending to the source and the year, the same regiment could have two or three rows of buttons in the right side of the pellise. I think your version is perfectly correct Davide.

Yes, I'm not surprised that this is new to you. It is a very common mistake re the 5th Hussars. Besides Petard, please check out the late great expert Lucien Rousselot in his plate #57. Three rows of buttons for the 5th and some of the other older hussar regiments from the ancien regime. I'm surprised that 'RIGO' shows five rows. I have great respect for his work. To my knowlege, there were never four rows. Only three or five rows on the dolman and pelisse.
I have been working on a Historex conversion of a trooper of the elite company of the same regt. It has been my favorite hussar regt. since I was a little boy. I love the color combinations. By the way, before you start painting your superbe figure, we should talk about the shade of blue involved. There is some controversy as to that! If you are interested, send me a private e-mail and we shall talk about that topic. All I'll say for now is......how do you like Detaille as a source! All the best.

The 5th reg. apparently changed from 3 to 5 rows in or about 1809, as did the 7th. This is not absolutely clear even in the contemporary iconography. Jouineau reports that the change occured when the dolmans were shortened in heigh in 1809.

Regarding gauntlets, they would be logically used with "pelisse jetée" because of the fur on the wrists and agree that they were mostly attributed to the "grosse cavalerie". However, Bucquoy is giving an illustration of a sapper - 3rd reg., I think - wearing such gauntlets with "pelisse chausée".

Hi paul I have no doubt that sappers wore gauntlets in all regiments as they
were handling axes coarse timbers and such, not so sure about troopers though, mind you I have seen some odd mixes in the Musee de L'armee

Thanks for joining in but that development is news to me. Not that I doubt you, but what is your reference for the '3 to 5' change? I will happily be corrected on this point. We can then debate the more nebulous subject of the correct shade of blue used by le 5eme hussards! Now that is more intersting of a point!
