Completed Gladiator - Secutor - Finished

Here's my latest work: a gladiator secutor from Evolution models, 54mm.

This figure took me very long to complete, because I re-did most parts
two or three times, and was very hesitant about painting the large areas
    of skin in acrylics.

I also was in doubt very much about what to do with the shield. Here PF
comrade Harry Ford was of great support by suggestion several patterns.
The design here uses features from gladiatorial shields seen in a mosaic
in 2nd century Zliten in Libya (hopefully not bombed these days...).
    Thanks a lot Harry! (y)

The Evolution figure (Sculpted by PF member Menelay) is excellent. I can
recommend it to everyone interested in the gladiator theme.

The pictures are bad, sorry about that. After trying several setups,
backgrounds, lighting conditions, etc, I've become quite frustrated about
photographing my models. Even with all the help available here at the
forum. Maybe I shouldn't expect more from my compact camera however
and this gives me the perfect excuse to get more decent gear...

    Enough chit-chat, here's some pictures:

    Adrian

Looks a great finish Adrian. Like the flesh tones, novel idea with the floral tribute. Not sure about the leg wedgies though. It's probably because he's got a sword, I'm thinking double amputation.
I still like it all the same,
    Carl.

Great job. The shield is nicely done also.

You left a few parts from another figure on the base..

    Great work Adrian.
Like the adition of the amputated legs.
But that sword had to be very sharp to do that.....I believe that it is impossible to cut a bone with a sword. (seen alot of amputations in my profession)

I really like how to have painted metals, leather, fabrics. The effect of the sand too. The drawing of the shield is very nice. But I agree with Carl that the feet on the ground are rare. It looks that are the feet of a gladiator died, that is not entirely on the scene, but still weirdo.:cautious:

    Great paintwork Adrian!
    The skin part looks good.

Marc: I don't think the legs represent amputated legs but a defeated gladiator wedgie.

    Cheers,
    Marcel.

I love the whole piece, Adrian.
Beautifully painted and the hint of a victim works well I reckon.
Flesh is great but perhaps the shield would benefit from some more wear and dirt.
    Well done.

I like it very much. And the paint job is really great. These feets are a really "nice" touch, but I am wondering why the poor loser of this fight did not had shoes...

    Hi Carl,

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment mate. Glad you like the skin and flowers.

Judging by the other responses the leg wedgie is not 100% clear. I painted the 'cut-off surface' black to avoid the idea of amputated legs, but was wondering how people would perceive them: as wedgie, or extreme violence... Ah well, let's see it as an experiment in perception!:)

    Hello Hans,

Thanks for your nice remarks. :)

About the bare feet: actually, gladiators fought bare foot according to my references. In many cases they would wear protective gear over the foot, at least on one leg. However, the romans butchered all sorts of living beings in the arena, including for example criminals. I figured these probaby did not always have the best of gear and that there must have been at least one bare footed victim at one time... At least that is my excuse for not sculpting some foot gear... ;)

    Cheers,
    Adrian

    Thanks Terry!

Yup, some feet from the spares box. In fact, they are the feet from Verlinden's 1:35 'German soldier at rest'. The 'at rest' is quite appropriate in this case, isn't it..?

Thanks John, glad you like the feet (as wedgie or amputations by the way...?)

    Hi Marc,

    Thanks for your remark!

Leaving aside the issue of wedgie or amputation, I agree that it would take quite some force and a sharp blade to get such a clean cut. On the other hand, it happens all the time in the movie Gladiator and I assume Hollywood paints a very realistic picture..!?

    Eduardo, Marcel,

Thanks for leaving your kind comments!

I guess the jury is still out on the feet....

I must say I think it is a bit more self-explanatory in the flesh (or is that wishful thinking at work?)

    Hi Mark,

    Thanks a lot!:)

I agree with you about the shield, but am affraid the picture gives the wrong impression. The colours are very saturated and obscure the details. Here's a (somewhat) better picture of the shield. Also a bit saturated, but I hope you can see the scratches I added. This is still without the blood stain BTW.

    Cheers,
    Adrian
