Hello friends from PF. This time, I decided to show you this magnificent figure from Pegaso Models of a magister militum, V century. Although a late period of the Roman Empire, the equipment is classic. I painted the figure with acrylics and I have used the bristles of a toothbrush to the grass of the land, because they are stronger and harder than the hairs of a brush. The colors I have chosen for the figure and the shield, are different from the box art.

Why did you prefer a "leather" armour over bronze oder tinned bronze?

Well, I choose paint the cuirass in brown leather following the painting instructions of the kit: "Cuirass in natural or coloured leather. Leather can be either red or white, with gilded fringes". So I tried to imitate curried leather.

Personally i dont like the yellow shield. It is superbe painted, but it distract my eye from the figure. The shield is to prominent.

Hi, thank you very much everyone for your comments. You are very kind. About the shield, the truth is that I have not given sufficient explanation. In principle, I kept the tread design you see on the box art, but changing the colors by an illustration in which there´s a roman officer at horse, from the same era, with a yellowish shield. I liked so I choose.




I also took a look to "Notitia Dignitatum", a source of symbols used in Roman shields. In this document there are a variety of designs and colors, although I didn´t found there my design or by Danilo Cartacci. However I think I could be historically valid.
I also recognize that yellow is perhaps too strong.

Greta work indeed m8 - I like the outcome and have noted the tooth brush method well. Bravo !!!

Don't take the colors in the Notitia Dignitatum too serious. All versions of her are mediveal copies made between 1440 and 1540. There are four of them, but only three are showing the drawings. The colours of the shields shown in the three versions are differing and nothing is known if the original from Speyer was coloured or not. It dissappeared in the 17th century. So, take your own choice and take colours which harmonise with your figure. Maybe your chosen yellow hue could be more on the ochre side (thinking on the yellow pigments available in the 5th century), but that's more a matter of taste than a fact.

Thank you very much Hans, for your aclaration. I agree. In many cases the only historical refference we have is not 100% accurate and yet we tend to take them to the letter.
