Okay here is my first day of posing the new wizard. I am using a very cool action figure sized artists mannequin sent to me by a web friend in Scotland. He actually sent me two on male one female. I thought the first looked a little too flat. The second worked better for me and I started to pose the actual 54mm mannequin. I actually got a little working staff and plams on to the little one but I guess I did not get any pictures of him before I left work. My wife thinks I need to ground the staff but he looks a little to much like a pikeman repelling calvary that way. I did try that.

Very cool mannequin Jeff (y) Who sells them?

Did you try a reverse grip of the staff hand? Might be more dramatic —

You mean over the top. Yea I may try that. It just would not stay in his hand for photos that way. ;-) As for who makes the mannequin, I am not sure the name all the writing on the box was Japanese. I will ask Bar. They come with about 5 sets of hands each.

Here are a couple of more shots of the 54. Had to go to the store and it is right across the street from the office. The head is one I did last year for practice and I think it will be greatly improved by adding long hair and a beard. ;-P

Just note the one in the photos is an old one that is missing its hands and one foot. it has been in the spars box for too long. They are great mannequins. They have shoulder blades so when you raise the arm the shoulder comes up as well. You should have a good idea of what pose you want because they do not stand up to a lot of bending without breaking.

It never occured to me to use a mannequin for posing, although it seems a fairly obvious tip now.

Looking forward to see the progress!

It may sound crazy but when I was younger I had made wooden props to go with my old standard sized wooden artist mannequin. I was thinking I need some basic props for these little guys now. Like I said the metal one is great but it will not hold up to a lot of bending, but if you have a good idea when you start they are just fine. That is why I used the plastic guy to work out the pose. The metal one started out weak because he was old and this was this third go around that is why he lost parts.

They are a little long in the leg but otherwise they are really nice they have articulation in just just about every joint Their ankle joints are double ball and socket so they rotate in just about every direction a real foot can. and like I said they come with a selection of hands. Fists open hands and various open grip holding hands some made for guns. I will lay them out and take a photo so you all can see the both of them.
I learned the value of using easy to pose figures in Shep Paine's sculpting class. To start the class we all made pipe cleaner figures and posed those for a while. I never forgot how fun that was. i still want to do a diorama of the little scene I came up with in that class.

Got the head cast up this weekend and also got Ma.K head I am working on cast up. They are not perfect but I can work with them. Seeing the 54mm head in resin I see things that need to be fixed, but that is a good thing it will be a better head now. Did not get any sculpting done on the figure but made a lot of choices on what he will wear. So in some ways that's half the battle.

I'm looking forward to see how these turn out !

The mannequins look really helpful, I agree on the legs and deltoids (shoulders) too ;)

I checked Ebay today and those things are going for 30 to 40 dollars some for a lot more then that. I had no idea, and they were a gift form someone I have never meet.

    Yikes!

It would be nice to see a resin set, simpler and more natural ;)

I wish I could say this was flying along, but this week was taken up with making make and take leather Boy Scout slides for Scout-O-Rama. Never be late to a parents meeting something might happen, like they make you Cub Master.

Actually got back to working on this figure. Sculpting his boots working my way up. Not sure how long his robes will be they will be open on the sides up to about his waist. I have his staff almost done . it has a ravens head headpiece. I still need to refine the beak. It was funny the first boot just did not flow as well as the one I did today. I guess I have knocked off some of the cob webs.

Managed to get a little more done got his medieval hose finished but now I really have to decide on the over all look of this fellow. The hose are not finished across the top as they will mostly be hidden under his gown. I am leaning towards a late medieval look over all. A hood would look good with that sort of look. A lot of people who have chimed in are hoping for a wizard style hat. Since his hat will be one of the last things I do I have some time.
