Are the grenade bags scratch? There's a hole and a fingerprint on the left shoulder, if you haven't finished please ignore that last comment.

In your titel you write over the top.
Yes, this is over the top in my opinion.
There is nothing left from the paintwork you have done on the face and helmet. It's almost covered with dirt.
So, for me: it is over the top.

the reason i have weathered so heavily is to give the impression of a stormtrooper who has been involved in heavy fighting , the trenches on the western front during ww1 were very muddy and dirty places a soldier who has been clambering through them is not going to be pristine they will get dirty hence the dirt

Ok. Your explanation for that look is ok but why are the colours for the mud different between the helmet and the face?

As my personal opinion I must agree with Marc. The dirty look is "over the top"

the dirt on the helmet is mud, the dirt on the face is from smoke and gun powder and is therefore black i took my inspiration from this very famous picture below

show the evidence of being in an intense firefight

    Simon,
Not always where the trenches muddy and dirty. Specially not for the German's who held the higher ground at the western front. The trenches of the Germans where very good drained. And the Germans where defending not attacking. So, i wonder if they where that dirty.

The face showed above is the black not from mud, but from the camouflage colors that the soldier put on his face. When i was in the army with did that with shoe polish, Norit for the black.

the western front by 1918 was muddy irrespective of drained trenches as the intense artillery fire and churned all the ground up (see pic) and the germans did
attack most famously at the kaisers battle so your history is a little off there

Simon, for what its worth, I appreciate your efforts to achieve a realistic look to your figure. Personally, I'd prefer to see someone go a little "over the top" on mud and dirt effects, than paint the figure as if he's just walked off the parade ground.

Having said that, I can also see where Marc and Ulrich are coming from too.

It's really a matter of personal choice and whether you are aiming for "realism" or trying to achieve an artistic finish. I would certainly encourage you to stick with the mud and dirt and "keep it real".

    Simon,
The Kaiserschlacht (Kaiser battle ) was in the spring of 1918 also know as the Ludendorff Offensive, to be precise 21 march until 17 july. Started with Operation Michael at Arras, Operation Georgette (battle of lys 9 april), Operation Blucher between Soissons and Reims and finally Operation Gneisenau near Compiegne.
If you want that in your figure the ground was more chalky, and therefore more white then black.

Autum of 1917 was very wet, cold and alot of rain, not spring 1918.
The picture that you show is taken at Thiepval Wood (background) lays in the nabourghood of the Somme (Thiepval Memorial) and show's the BEF not the German Stormtrooper.

So if you paint a Stormtrooper into the Kaiser battle, less mud is still better.
The muddy part of the western front was near Ypres, the Ypres Salient, the cause of the mud was the innudation of the region and the blue clay what is not the best ground for draining water.
The Kaiserbattle was not there, they get no further then the Kemmel.
If your interest in these region, I live only 50 km from it, so history of this region is well known.

thanks Tony for your kind words regarding this

Marc i'm trully suprised to find someone who has such an intermate knowledge of the geology of the western front and how much mud was on the ground on a month by month basis you have beaten me on this one

I don't have the intention the knowing better then someone else. But if you want a historical correct painted figure (you mentioned the kaiserbattle) then you have the choice to paint it that way, or doing what you like.
    .....the choice is yours.
You ask if you where going over the top.....well in my opinion you did it.

well if we leave the historical debattes aside one has to think that an figure represenst an human in scale.so the effects should suit the scale.
its very hard to convincingly paint sweat dirtstracks and other effects in scale.only high class painters can do that convincingly.
i can not so i do it not normaly.even if one comes out of the soil one would think the soldiers tried at least to get their face clean.because in the waters and soil so many rotten bodyparts where lying nobody want to have that in face.so i have in my remembering never seen an photo of an german soldier in trench with such an soiled face.
neverless apart from that it does not look to nice in my eyes its just to much and to extreme.and not in scale
i think your paints are very thick on the helmet too,and the pattern looks odd the strormtrooper Mimikri looked different.
well only an oppinion if you like it you decide
as bob ross said in our own little world everything is possible.so the own taste is here the main aspect.
    cheers

    Hi there,
I'm not sure where you got the reference for the camo of the helmet. Is the mustard colour dried mud as it seems a bit thick to be paint. I also would agree with Megroot, it does look a teensy weensy bit overdone.
I Don't know if the face is actually shaded but if he had mud there would be different tones.i.e. dried, half dried, wet, sweat straeked. It's almost as if you have painted random mud on his face and it looks as though there are just two colours on his face....flesh and mud. his helmet would also have the same tone of mud as was on his face if it was a recent shell that had exploded dirt all over him.
Other than that..the eyes look good.
