This site is good for helmet references:
    http://www.legionsix.org/Equipment/Real Gear/Real Gear 2.htm
and this one for helmet reconstruction:
    http://www.history-revisited.com/kat/cat/28/name/celts-and-romans-helmet

As regards what a signifer would have looked like, most is speculation based on representations on tombs, friezes and Trajan's column. Some of these sculptures are significantly eroded, some less so.

All in all a creditable first attempt of bust from a popular period in history.

    Keep up the good work,

    Mike

hello beware with the helmets there are many sience fiction creations amongst them.alone this weird gladiator russel crow helmet.
if you want see real ones one should try to get books about excavated items.one often find such things in the book tsrores of museum.
like in louvre-well here is everything french written
but iam sure in metropolitan one should find and rich source of lecture.
in germany the stores are good equipped.
but good reserach books are often pricy
    cheers

    hi gordy
the link you use is the one with the orginals from museum context
but the other one with the reconstructions does show lots of totally incorrect stuff.
it is as alway you will find it difficult to find an book in which you find any helmet.
so one has to use an wide array.i found it often helpfull to search the net for auction houses
one can look hermannhistorica.de or sothebys ect
there often lots of ancient weapons are auctioned.then one shall think on all books of Marcus Junkelmann leading roman equippment expert.in english Pete Conolly or Michale Simkins have released very good publications about roman arms and armour.
when one try to research those names in net one will find something.an bad rfeernce are documentations.while the spoken context is often excellent the play scenes are totally weird.here one finds those plastic shields from the terrible Attila movie in and other incorrect.
i admitt it can be terrible for an person which is not so interested in the aspects to get ad hoc informations about an special thing.one can say there is seldom only one single source which serves any need one must try to mix up some information.
but with some determination one gets along.often one can take on the net walks through museums which have those facilities newly established.
as told the link you refering is very fine
the second with the reconstructions is very very very shaky .its an combination of some catalogues of companys selling replic stuff made in india.while some items are ok some like the gladiator helmet are odd.so i would not use this for an relevant reserach.in short there is no information available which brings all in one side.this second side link one can forget totally.its not to use when you trying to resaarch the look of an roman helmet
    those are name
    MONTEFORTINO
    IMPERIAL GALLIC C
    WEISSENAU
    COOLUS
ect you may check wikipedia for this and get some good basic informations with pictures ect
    swords are called
    GREEK XIPOS
    GLADIUS MAINZ OR FULHAM GLADIUS
    POMPEJAN GLADIUS
    SPATHA
or the sabre bladed single edged slashing sword KOPIS or MACHAIRA
under thios you get good informations in the net-maybe that helps an little?
if one wants to check gladiatur arms one should look in finds at the pompejian gladiators barrack here nearly all overcome gladiator equippment was found.

    cheers

when it goes the roman shield those are called
PARMA for the round shield of the aquilifers ect
SCUTUM or SCUTA for the classic legionary shield
OVALSCUTUM for the early style used at marius in republican army
then you have the boots called
    CALLIGAE
    the belt is called
    CINGULUM MILITARE
    the body armours
LORICA SEGMENTATA-the body armour made from paltes
LORICA SQUAMATA or LORICA PLUMATA-body armour in scales
    LORICA HAMATA mail armour
the undergarment with the leather stripes is called
    PTERIGUES
    the dagger was called PUGIO
    the lance is called HASTA
the throwing lance PILUM or PILA
the working axe is called DOLABRA
    the cooking pan PATERA
    knife is CUTELLUS
    ect ect
any militia troops where called AUXILLIA
the roman standart can be called SIGNUM VEXILLUM AQUILA ect
so with this names tipped in the net reserach one will find many informations about the stuff and one side will bring informations to other
    hope this helps

This site appears to show museum pieces which have been recovered from archeological sites. The other site I quoted appears to show replicas based on museum exhibits. As regards gladiator helmets, there are a number of archeological findings available on the web, e.g. http://www.flickr.com/photos/40060535@N05/galleries/72157622981530405. I used this reference to make a 200mm scale helmet for a gladiator 1/2 figure, sculpted by Pete Morton and now also with Terry of Foxwood Figures.

    Best wishes,

    Mike
