My First Try at Sculpting (1/9 bust)

I will post the rest of the progress of this project here 'cause sculpting thread doesn't appear on my vBench list.

OK, this is the current status of my first sculpting bust. I've just over coated with Tamiya Primer surfacer. I will fix the rough part, I think it needs more sand to get smoother surface.



As always, any comments are welcome.

I'm glad to know that there's some people who like this subject. The reason why I wanted to do this subject is because I couldn't find any other work about this subject. (Maybe there's some, but I just still haven't found any.) I want to try the subject not so many people do. I just want to do something different.

Thank you very much Paul. This is really encouraging comment 'cause "natural" is my favorite word. yes, it really is. I don't know if I have any talent on this but I don't care about it now 'cause I just want to try at sculpting and want to have a "sculptor's view".

Indeed it's amazing as first TRY.
I think the thing to which an arm was expressed became finer for charm of this figure.

I need to clean up and shape and fix many parts, and its surface is little too rough to paint. I now really admire what the pro sculptors do...

I still haven't decided whether I should add a light mustache or not. Maybe he looks trimmed too well, I don't know.

Sailor's Beret

I suspect you already have references for the beret, since it is so well done. Just a question - will you work in the anchor insignia in relief or paint it on? I think the anchor in relief would be a nice touch. If I were doing the beret, I'd give it a try.

Yes I've had references for that. I was inspired by the sailor photo I posted here:

The beret they put on have no anchor in relief, but, I looked for many images of the beret used in early 1900's and I found that there were several types of beret.

To tell the truth, I haven't decided whether I put anchor in relief on or not till now. And yes I agree with your opinion that would be a nice touch, and that would be a good icon to show what this guy's job is.

I don't know if I can sculpt a nice anchor shape but I will give it a try.
