started this 90mm mounted figure from Andrea the other day. I m not a great fan of horse painting, actually i haven t painted more than five or so of them. Did my best with oils. Please feel free to comment,suggest and criticize.

Carl i think you are right about the musculature, and knowing my painting style i might have overdone contrast as usual!!!

Great start on the horse Demitrios, yes the rear musculature is a bit overdone in the cast but doesn't detract too much nice overall.

Excellent work on the horse.
I think you must tone down the musculs. They are tho pronounced. With a less harder shading it should look better.
But thats only my opinion.

I clicked in when there was no comment and went out for some Chinese cuisine with a vague impression of "Wow an Arnold of a horse this".

Obviously the muscles here are very, very defined, and I can see the fun of doing that. Now, is this ok? Should it be toned down? I think it is a very personal choice.

There are a lot of masters who excel in exagerated highlights, but then again you have Mr Ishii, who approaches the same scale with such heart-stopping subtlety and naturalism, the transition between white and 'pink' flesh happens like a 'Hit-or-Miss'. I love both styles (usually starting out to copy Mr Ishii's style and ended up the opposite direction). For example I adore your last project, Dimitrios, which now is your profile pic. It is easy to see how a painter who brings us this handsome Spartan is likely to deliver a very muscular horse, especially when this particular horse kit is sculpted so.

In another word, this horse is so far to me a cracking piece of 'eye candy'. I have seen human faces with much more noted variations in flesh tone being flattered (and I dont mean this 100% favourably). Compared to those, this still has some way to go before crossing the line.

I wanted this kit badly but it was out of stock. Will follow closely.

I think the horse is very fine Dimitrios, but might be a little better with less harsh highlight/shadows but that is really just a personal call and could well be the lighting photograph.

I would like to see a very, very little glaze to the oils when done to reproduce the sheen of a horse coat.

Overall this looks pretty good but I have to agree with other comments that the muscles are overdone particularly the horse's flanks.

Thank you all for your comments and productive critique. I can see what you are pointing out. The contrast is In fact unatural. I will try to balance things a bit see how it goes.
