An out of the way ma and pa restaurant or greasy spoon is always a welcome break from the Red Lobsters and Olive Gardens.

My favourite is Franks in Schulenburg, Texas . We'd stop there when I was young and traveling west from Houston, 30 years ago, I was glad to see it still there when we visited Texas in '08 The best chicken fried steak and pecan pie ever!

Oh boy... Chicken fried steak is one of my favorite American dishes!
With white sausage gravy... yeah

True! Now I only have chicken fried steak two or three times a year, the best local place is Cracker Barrel But when in Texas to Frank's for sure!

OK, so I found this place by chance one day, being fairly new to the Knoxville area and all.....but my favorite greasy-spoon for sure right now is a place in East Knoxville called The Lunch House. Daily specials, reasonable prices, big portions, a staff that are career waitreses and THE BEST blackberry cobbler I have ever put spoon to in my life! I thought my wife was having an out of body experience the first time we tried it! I personally go for the turkey and stuffing plate when it's available. The specials are different every day. It's outstanding!

A fruit pastry: Peach or apple are prominent flavours, blackberry is rarer and divine!

I never knew you lot over the pond used the expression 'greasy spoon'! I thought that was just us in the south east? (Mockney Cockney!).

While I was living in Tasmania, some weekends, I used to lad the dog into the car, drive 10 minutes to the town of Penguin, and eat at the "Groovy Penguin" cafe.

Little Brown Dog would wait for tid-bits (Big breakfasts are really big there!) and great coffees and Teas.

Plus there was a chocolate shop near by, good for any lady friends I was with at the time.

Made for a great part of a relaxing day.

When I lived on the Eastern Shore of Maryland there was this converted gas staion that was made into a seafood resturant called Mutts. Best crab cakes I ever found.

OK that's a new one on me, what is `Chicken fried steak`, I am assuming you don't have chickens working in your greasy spoons that cook the steak for you

Steve, it's a flattened steak, breaded and fried served with white gravy And as terrible for the innards it is, it's just as yummy!

here in the north of England the best simple food is usually from little trailer/wagon things with a hatch on the side at the side of the road

My local is " Oggies " and the best thing is a Belly Buster!

large white bread bun ( cake, stottie etc ) and butter with eggs, sausage, bacon, black pudding, tomatoes and mushrooms. It's as big as a small childs head and costs £2.50

And a mug of tea is naturally the only way to wash it down.

Ah! We endearingly refer to those as a "Roach Coach" in the States, and I fondly remember the road side tamales wagons next to I-45 onramp when I lived in Houston. The best ever!!
