This is my latest completed piece. It is a nice figure by JMD, the subject is not really in my sphere of interest as far as warriors go but he is the painters figure for next years Tulsa show so I wanted to get him out of the way early. My wife calls him the "dirt ball". Well here he is, and feel free to comment good or bad who knows I may paint another "dirt ball" one day and can use the comments for reference.

Well aren't you just the early bird!! Sweet paint job!! I intend to do this piece but am really mulling over the tans and how to get good contrasts...thanks for the inspiration!

I know what you mean with the wife's dirt ball description...I showed my wife the Zulu work in progress..probably the best thing I've done yet and she looked at it and said..."Not very colorful, is he"...(its about the best shading and highlights that I've done to date  ) sigh

This is looking great, can't wait to see it in the flesh!!

    Hi Mike,
A figure in dramatic style and a very good painting, however, a larger base and with a similar problem may show more overall superiority figure.
    Bravo!!

This is a figure i ewnjoyed a lot and i see you did the same. As Alexandrow said the painting you did gave a dramatic tone and made this piece different .

    Well done my friend

Monotone figures can present a challenge, and I think that you've done a great job on this one.

Good job Mike and i like your different approach to painting this peice, lets face it it was a very dirty enviroment in the trenches which reflect in your figure.

Thanks guys for the kind words. Yeah, that was a dreary existence in those trenches and I'm glad it could be seen in the painting. The monotone uniforms of modern warriors is really why I don't like to paint them but I love to read about them. Thanks again, now I'm off to paint a Knight with a slight conversion to him (thanks Costas for the inspiration).

Took me a while to figure out why "dirt ball". I think I get it now...
A really unique approach, Mike. Thumbs up!
The monotone uniforms are actually a stimulus for me as a fan boy! It gives war a much grittier feel in my opinion. But then again I grew up with Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers and even the way those were shot was meant to be monotone...

    Hi Mike,

I think you really have really captured the feel of this figure. The Khaki's are a tough color to work work with and you managed them very well. I can't wait to this one in person.

Mike, great painting, the effect from certain angles makes him look almost bronzed. Excellent weathering.(y)
