tried cheetah skin for the Hussars headgear. I tried to fade from light to dark, bottom to top respectively. I used dark flesh lightened and then orange brown lightened then pureorange brown for the inner spots of the black. I need to darken the colour of the orange brown....any ideas.
I think I need to make the spots smaller. One side looks kinda like Cheetah skin the other side bloomin giraffe skin.

Grant have you got Danilo Cartacci book? There's an article in that on painting furs.
    Great job so far,
    Carl.

    Very nice paintwork.
In my opinion it doesn't look bad at all.

    Hi Grant,

I think what you have done so far is quite satisfactory. With no such experience myself, I would nontheless like to point out, as a spectator, that depth on a micro level might be achievable if you could selectively squeeze in some highlight on a "hair-by-hair" basis for both the wolf skin and the cheetah skin. Of course it might already be the case and the photo didn't bring it out...

Here are a couple of links you might find relevant (or not):

    All the best!

    thanks Michael

That cheetah guy looks spot on!
I'd love to try that but my air brush doesn't go that small for the dots.
    Brillaint links, many thanks.

I like the way you painted this bust. But you should call the skin, leopard skin, because the cheetah fur has only black dots with no color inside them. Great painting.

While you're at it....what mixes did you use for the wolf pelt? Very nice

The spots do seem to be a bit larger on one side than the other. Also, the base color looks like it might be a tad orange - should be more of a greyed-out yellow-ish buff-ish color. The best thing to do is study real life photos. Try getting a book on wild cats or just google some images. Here's a couple pics of some leopard skin I've done recently, hope that might help a bit. Good luck!

    Wow!

Jeez Jason your figures are an extremely high standard. The leopard skin is great. I did google cheetah skin and the pic I got was obviously leopard. I wrongly assumed the metaphor about the leopard never changing it's spots was the cat with the spots. Doh!
I'm going to try real cheetah now.
    Many thanks.

    Thanks Paul,
It was a mixture of greys, chocolate brown, german camo black and I think it was natural wood to give it a wee colour tone change.

I guess airbrushing isn't necessary for those spots. Glad you like it.
