Worked some more on the head again tweeking the features more to get a better likeness, i am still not 100% happy but i feel he is moving in the right direction, any critique or comment would be most welcome.

I am trying to get the look of russell Crowe as he is now which is ten years older than he was in Gladiator and with a few more pounds on him nowdays.

fer sure, mate, I'm not jussss blowin' smoke here. :):)

Eager to see how this continues, Steve.

Wow, the likeness is very nigh on now. Would be perfect if the forehead is flatter and the hair correspondingly moving a bit fwd. And then we will have something to rival Young's Russel sculpt.

    Way to go!

Steve, great work and looking better. The side profiles are spot on however looking at the head on face pic I would angle his chin as it looks very square.
Nice idea to cut paste the head onto the pic like that, wll try that in the future. Cheers Matey will follow with interest. Ken(y)

    Hi Steve,

I think Ken's picked the key facial feature that requires more work- the jaw line on your bust seems too square and doesn't taper towards the chin as sharply as Russell's does in the photo. Also Russell's chin seems deeper and more pronounced that your bust, which tends to elongate his head.

My only other suggestion is to re-examine the underside of the nose. Your nose seems to drop towards the tip, whereas in the pic, Russ's nose seems to rise slightly at the tip, which creates the impression of a larger upper lip.

I hope this helps mate, as I'd really like to see this bust come out well.

You picked a difficult (IMHO) subject, thats for sure. I re-sculpted a head for my Jaguar 200mm Roman General figure, and found that Russell has some very unique features. It appears to me you need to make his nose a bit larger(more pointed). I noted when I was working on my figure that Russell has a very straight and somewhat large nose. It appears dead straight on the bridge, with a straight bottom. Heres a good side view. From the front its quite triangular.

I also think his head should be just a little bit taller and slightly narrower at the top, the hair part that is. I think right now its just a little flat. From some angles Russell has a wide head, in others its kind of tall and narrow. Very unique eyes, and the roundness below the bottom lip gave me fits. Also note that he has a flat spot on the back of his head. The first time I saw it I wondered if my head was shaped like that, but its not, and you can see that in the attached photo as well. Keep up the good work, its always fun to see the beginning effort and the final result.

Thanks for the many responses to this one, i am still plugging away at it and there are few good points put forward which i will look at, this one has turned far more complicated than i first thought but it has got under my skin now and i have to keep at it.

Andy...might deepen the corners some more on the mouth :)

Ken & Tony... will look at the chin and nose again (y)

Jason... you are spot on mate he is a difficult caracter to portray as with different images you get different looks, the main problem is i am trying to get him as he is today which is quite a bit different than his days as Maximus, at one point he put a lot of weight on, although he dropped a lot he still has more weight around his face now.

I will post again soon with updates, again thanks for the comments.

Well done Steve now it is much much better I think you can also see the difference. I also agree with the other guys about those little details you have to do to make your bust perfect. Keep up the good work.

Steve, wow thats a great sculpt my friend! I think that you have done an excellent job with this representation. Faces are very difficult especially with all of the features, and of course looking at a flat picture for reference. Nice job and keep up the great work! :D

    Steve,
That's a great looking sculpture! (y) Sculpting a person or well known character is even more challenging. I always have a deep respect for the people who can do that. And you are doing a superb job. For a better resemblance I agree with the others that lifting the tip of the nose and adjusting the chin would improve the figure.

    Cheers,
    Marcel.

Derek, Jim and Marcel thanks for the comments on the figure, i have done more work since these pictures and will hopefully uplaod them soon.

Marcel yes i can see there could be more work done on the chin the more i look at it, as for the nose its a hard choice because it depends on which image i work from as to how the nose looks, from certain angles it looks different, i will keep working it though.

    All the best,

    Steve,
good to see you refining the face, and getting closer each time.

I remember another discussion on a different website, and the poor guy was about ready to be carted off the nut house, trying to get a likeness of Jennifer Connolly.

It is strikes me as far easier to o sculpt a 'generic' face, then a likeness......

Keep it up, I can see the improvement!

Jamie believe me mate the nut house is about a day away at the moment, i have decided to cast a copy of the head and paint it up to see how he looks with some colour on him, a grey surface doesnt really show the features well enough.

I will let you know how it pans out thats if i havent had a complete breakdown beforehand :p
