    Hi everyone.

Here in West Aus, we really only have one painting competition
I really like participating in painting comps so was wondering if anyone knows about some online competitions.

I'm looking specifically for competitions that have a bust category (for my historical stuff) and a fantasy/sci fi category (for my anime girls)

I look forward to Chief again this year if its happening :)

    Hi Scott
Just keep a lookout here on PF in the next few weeks, we have something that we are in the middle of sorting out which will be announced very soon.
    Cheers

    Scott,
Painting your figures is more important then compete against eachother. Ofcours it is great that the figure that you have paint is "better" then that from a pro.
But there is nothing more frustrating then that you think that yours is better then another.
Therefore, keep painting, but do it for yourself. Beside that you can compete but you be alot more disappointed then you think.

I think that on-line figure competitions actually is more of a miniature photography competition?

However it is not always about winning and perhaps its a good event for the community?

err...I think you misunderstood me... When I said about "versuing pros is not what I had in mind" I definately did not mean I was better at all. really most of the time I am the opposite - I get told off by my club for putting my work down :)

I never think my models is better than another (well...ok - some times. but I'm human right?)

I am a competitive person by nature and I enjoy the competitions. Its extra incentive for me to put down the DS or PSP and really concentrate on my painting and get even better at what I do.

Uruk-Hai, yes you are totally correct! I know it is. but until West Aus gets some more painting competitions that allows large scales and historical stuff, I have no other option.

hope that clears some things up

I agree. Seems to me the level of competition will rely upon the skills of the photographer.

No point in me entering then, my photography is worse than my painting.

It is not anything at the moment! Everyone will have a choice, you either enter or you don’t, it’s supposed to be a bit of fun with a few prizes handed out at the end of it.

Apologies Tommi, I was trying to detract from the fun element. I was just saying that my photography is dire.

Hey Scott, do you know about OzPainters? Some of the readers there also participate in the yearly Chick Challenge at Legio Pictorum (it's an Italian forum). Though most of the entries are minis, your stuff would fit in the So Big category. Of course, it's stiff competition there too... :)

No problem Carl, my comment was not directly aimed at you, I also have lots of issues with photography, I have to take lots of images under different lighting to get a half decent picture, it’s all part of the fun though (maybe!) ;)

Perhaps it's an excuse to get a decent camera.

True, a good figure will not look it´s best if poorly photographed.
But digital cameras have vastly improved the results that "Everyman" can achieve.
Brilliant photography will not improve a poorly finished model very much, either.
In fact close-up photographs often reveal flaws on small masterpieces that some of us go back and work on after having seen them.

No model competition is perfect, different lighting, a different judging panel, a different selection of competitors, these can all influence the results.

Seems like a good Pf initiative to me Tommi.
And it may inspire some to work on their photographic skills too. :)

    Spike.
