While at the IPMS show at RAF Hendon recently i picked up this little cracker!

i'm going to run with the company websites concept of a cyborg, but i'm gonna paint him ( it's a him in there i'm sure ) in a very battered semi customised state.

i plan on using Masking fluid, salt and possibly some marmite to get different textures on the basic finish and celtic or tribal designs for his "Paint" but i could go gigeresque too, not decided yet....

    :)

    Mark,
    of course it's male.....

    Mark,
did this piece come in this state, or did you paint the dark steele base coat we see here? Is the kit resin? Should come to life with your ideas, can't wait to see what you come up with! Really like this character. Can you share the web site? Thanks,

Jay... this is cleaned up and undercoated with auto primer and a satin black pics below of raw product! the body is one piece and took some cleaning up, but it looks nice, the sholder and base are seperate castings, good quality overall and nice firm resin, not brittle at all

    :)

Roger! many thanks and yes for the first time i'm doing a piece that has no box art ( or even images yet LOL )

Looks really interesting. I'll be following your progress on this one. Always enjoy seeing how people treat metals differently. BTW, is this a Warhammer piece? It looks a lot like the Mecrons from the 40,000 series. And no, I'm not into Warhammer but my sons were years ago:)

Hey, is that a Hawker Hurricane radiator fairing on your shoulder, or are you just happy to see me?

ah marmite... i've had it on toast quite alot but i've never tried it as a masking fluid .... gulp!

Hi Paul, as far as i know the inspiration is 1930's robots, but i can see a hint of the Queen album cover and some 50's style of comicbook robotics.... it does have a mecronish feel too, iguess the sculptor was just having fun :) i know the instant i saw it on MDC's stand i wanted it :)

ROFL! i knew it was a radiator off a wingy thing! hehehe

    Some paint and chipping progress.........

After the black autopaint base had hardened ( 24 hrs ) i applied maskol ( humbrols latex based art masking fluid ) with a bit of pan scrubber and a fine brush

    a. shows the piece with two shades of GW silvers sprayed on, boltgun and chainmail. I've left the masks in place and added some more maskol and a layer of hairspay

    b. two shades of AV acrylics sprayed on, english uniform base and decktan to highlight..... i used a hair dryer to set the paint, used an eraser to rub off the maskol and then wet the parts and VERY GENTLY rubbed, scraped and brushed the paint off...

    resulting in c.

these are base coats, next will be rocksalt with the actual chassis colour ( sort of primer red ish ) and then the marmite for the contrast markings... oh i hope this is all gonna work

    a. wet the areas of wear and sprinkle salt on, allow to dry

    b. spray the final colour and allow to dry ( i used a hair dryer )

    c. run the piece under a tap and very gently rub the salt, it just washes away

d.printed symbols cut out and applied cheapo spray mount with a cotton bud

    e. mask in place with protective masking to prevent over spray and hair spayed over!!!

    f. the yellow sprayed

    g. the un-damaged design... i gave it a quick cook with the hair dryer, then wet the yellow paint and allowed it to soften a bit and scrubbed and scuffed it with a stiff stippling brush.........

    so did it work?

i think so, i wanted these effects to add some depth to the finish as if the casing of this cyborg has seen some action and different jobs.

so now i get to do some brush painting :)

    woot!

    Excellent work.
I really enjoying to read how you did the weathering. It's really helpfull but unfortenally it works only for this giant scales in my opinion.
If you have other experience's i'm glad to hear, because i really like the effect.

I agree with Marc, I also enjoyed reading how you achieved the weathering. Very effective.
