This is a little vignette based on a wartime illustration by Stanley Wood. The dog is a Jack Russell terrier and the soldier is a private in the Royal East Kent regiment (the Buffs) writing to his loved ones.

The fine Australian painter and sculptor, Tony Dawe will be painting this one. I'm looking forward to that!!

I'm a little concerned that John McNenney may have some difficulty in casting the trench bit with the deep hollow behind the figure. I may have to modify that a bit. The intent is for this to be the fourth of The Old Contemptibles figures.

    Hope you like it!

    All the best,
    Dan

Hi Dan, I didn't know you were doing this :)

One thing though, "The Buffs" was the nickname of the Royal East Kent Regiment not the Essex Regt.

    Hi Dan,
Another brilliant figure, well done. Is that electrician's tape you've used for the puttees?

Also Dan, with your keen interest in WW1, you may be interested in something I posted on the Great War Forum ( http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/ ). 500 odd negatives, mainly studio portraits of commonwealth soldiers from the Great War, were found in an old shop fireplace. Go to forums, then 'classic threads', and the post is titled 'Glass plate negatives discovered in..'.

    All the best,
    Jon.

    Hi Dan,

Thanks for the plug mate,I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it.

I've sent you an email with my observations and a few suggestions. I have some good reference pics for The Royal East Kent Regiment (The Buffs), and will google a few pics of Jack Russels.

Well done mate. I hope you can resolve your casting issues.

Many thanks to everyone! Looking at the photos online and reading an excellent critique from Tony, I've decided to make a few changes which I hope will improve the scene a bit. So there may be a delay in casting and release. Sorry about that! If you can hang in there with me, I would appreciate it!

Jon - It's black paper adhesive backed map tape sold in art stores, office supply stores, etc. About three millimeters in width. I sculpt the calves narrowly and smoothly, a little smaller than you normally would. Then glue down the starting point of the map tape with superglue and just wind it tightly and press it on. The nicest thing about the tape is that it has a slightly roughened surface and when painted some of the texture is visible.

    All the best,

Many thanks everyone! A six pack and a bunny! LOLOLOL

I'd like all of you to regard this as a WIP vs. a final product. Still working on the position of the soldier and the doggie and the doggie itself. I'm not completely satisfied with the outcome. Anyways...stay tuned, we'll see if we can't improve things a bit and I'll post again.

    All the best,
    Dan
