This is the subject of my next figure study. Alonzo Hayden was a member of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. On July 2, 1863 he was mortally wounded during the 1st Minnesota's charge. Hayden died on July 3 and would eventually be buried at the National Cemetary at Gettysburg. The following pictures are of the real Alonzo and the drawing that will become the painting.

If an artists like you would paint me, I would almost wish I'd died at Gettysburg.

Gary...he's mum would be proud..it looks great at this stage...the likeness to the youngster is very noticeable, that's got to be one of the more challenging aspects of the drawing....do you think the painting will further enhance the resemblance..??...if it does, it would look great displayed along with the original picture.

    Really excellent Gary.

Who did the drawing? It should be framed and hung on a wall!

Roy, Thanks. Likenesses are tough to do. This is the only image of Hayden I know of so I'll have to stick to shading the face as it is in the photograph.~Gary

The first step in painting Alonzo is complete. This tonal painting helps me to establish where the lights and darks will eventually end up. The completed painting will be 11" X 13" and is shown alongside the original drawing.

I hope to start a few sculpting projects soon in addition to working on these paintings.

    Gary,
Even this are not the real colors, i just like the yellowish tone. Looks like old parchment drawing.
Looking forward to your further painting.

I need some suggestions here. Using your eyes could you compare the painting to the photo and tell me what YOU feel it needs to make the likeness better? I appreciate any and all comments.

Gary - IMHO, the face in the photo looks broader thru the cheeks and forehead. The photo has wider, fuller upper and mid cheeks. The lower part of the ear lobe is lower and heavier looking in the photo. In general the face in the photo is flatter and broader than in your painting. I hope I haven't offended. Feel free to disagree. After all, as my son Kyle says, an artist can only use his own eyes.
    All the best,
    Dan

    Gary,

Looking good but I to agree the real picture he seems to have amore roundish face and your painting he is more squared/angled. I hope this makes sense.
