Picked this bust (kit) up at the stoke model show from the guys at RDG/ Mitches Military Models stand.

Its a very impressive and will be a large piece when finished, looking at the display item, standing at over 27mm tall when finished. As usual the detailing, sculpting and casting are superb, one piece was damaged and missed another piece, but an email to RDG and they were in the post, at no charge - excellent customer care.
Pieces have had the casting point removed and cleaned up. Horse head has been glued to the body, small gap filled with Vallejo Putty. Rider has had his lower legs glued in place.

Major items have had a primer coat added so now need a acrylic base coat then onto the oils

    Hi Steve

I was wondering about this so it's good to see it on someone's bench

I like the breakdown of the pieces , to aid the painting after careful prep etc

It's a interesting option to offer in the way it's cut

Have you any initial thoughts on the style of base you'd use ?

What references are you using ?

    Following with interest

    Happy benchtime

Acrylic base coats on, ready for the oils.
Nap got a great book on samurais from the armoury press and loads of images of different styles of clothing online. Didn’t realise that not all armour was the same colour on a single samurai.

Richard Wharton at Oakwood Studio has made a beautiful polished wooden base specifically for this bust. It matches well and he sold several at the release of the bust at the Easingwold show a couple of months back in which all kits were sold out by the middle of the day, very popular piece even months on after the release. A credit to our good friend Nello Rivieccio on a fantastic sculpt.

All at RDG look forward to seeing your progress on this Steve;)

I have been in touch with Richard about one of his bases. Hope it comes pre drilled. Cause I would ruin it if I have to drill a hole as wide as it needs. Was bad enough drilling a hole to use as a handle

You can always ask him to drill it before sending it out, I’m pretty sure he would help out

Not my thing but superb sculpting. Richard at Oakwood Studio does excellent bases and always provides a first class service.

It is a small pony type horse. Too bad it is not the Japanese Kiso breed ridden by the Samurai.

    This is the book;

By no means is it a comprehensive tome on samurai but a good visual guide.

Going with the traditional red body armour and shoulder pads, pale blue shorts with flower design, then may go black for the skirt armour.

Looking forward to seeing your take on this Steve. Got the full figure in the GA but must admit, seeing this one in the flesh, it’s a very imposing and super piece.
