So, bearing in mind that I’ve left out, at the very least, 50% of my video collection from these lists; of those I’ve highlighted, which is my numero uno absolute favorite non-military movie?
Well, while Casablanca has to be my most re-watched of all time, so far I quite deliberately haven’t mentioned one particular film that I first saw while enjoying a spot of R/R at a company staff-house in Deir-ez-Zor, Syria, and was simply blown away by it. (Oops – have just realized that’s probably a poor choice of words given what’s gone down in that city/area since completing my assignments there in the early-1990’s).

This is a movie that has everything a film buff could want. Tremendous script and dialogue, and excellent character development – even the minor characters are fully rounded out with real personalities. Good mix of drama and comedy, and great chemistry between all the lead actors.
Plus, I reckon that keeping the Dublin setting as per the book worked far better than if the same story had been depicted as happening somewhere Stateside, or even in the UK.

Andrew Strong (b. Nov 1973) has gone on to carve out a successful solo career. Hard to believe he was only 16 when the movie was filmed). I love Linda Ronstadt’s version of the often-covered “Dark End of the Street”, but Andrew simply nails it with this terrific performance.

Nor can I ignore my favorite Commitment-ette…the gorgeous Maria Doyle Kennedy (b. Sep 1964) giving her all with this old Aretha standard.

And, of course, I guess I really ought to thank the OP for providing the opportunity to share my listed choices on what has been a rather splendidly entertaining thread.
    Oh yeah – and Elvis definitely “Wasn’t a Cajun”…...:D

    Forgot;

    2001
    Three Musketeers and sequel
The Good the Bad and the Ugly
Mulholland Drive - (amazing once you figure out what it's all about).
    Eraserhead
Martyrs - (heavy going - shook me up)

I know these have military elements but they chiefly follow civilians or those caught up in war

    Come and See
    Warsaw 44
    The Pianist
    Schindlers list

Now I'm worried. There are two versions, 2008 the French original and a sanitized 2015 American remake which is to be avoided at all costs.
I can't say I "recommend" this film to anyone.
I'm a seasoned Horror fan and am used to strong violence but this film is graphically brutal towards young girls. It's not an easy watch, but the final scenes justify what's gone before and it leaves you with some philosophical problems for you to think about. The resolution is also not fully resolved - (similar to John Carpenter's The Thing)
I can't imagine anyone "enjoying" this film, but, out of pity for the ordeal the lead girl goes through, it remained imprinted on my brain for days after I watched it .

Yes Nap, I had a thousand war films on my list but left them out, (very difficult to do), due to the original thread question (non military)
But, as you brought it up, I also love the original 1930 version of AQOTWF.

Besides, I've got Mary Queen Of Scots (1971) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067402/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0
lined up for another re-watch tonight. It's in the same league as Braveheart -- a reasonable enough fantasy movie...:D
Avoid the 2018 effort with Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie. It's awful, in all ways. As is the 2013 version...:wideyed:

So I think you should watch it as it is not so much about the sport but chasing your dream at an older age. Each scene is a work of art, the lighting goes dark around the bad people and is bright in the Scenes of the good people. If you watch it again and again you understand what the director was trying to do with the story. This all came to me afterwards.
