Thanks for the heads-up Kev(y) - I will watch it and have a bid if it doesn't go silly - still 6 days to run.

Good point. Looks like a new seller, so he/she might be open to one. I'll give it a go and report back.

It's mine! Thanks again Kev. Like many of us in the modelling community, Shep Paine is an icon to me, so I am particularly pleased to get this bargain. Much of what we do has its roots in Shep's work.

It's a great book. I have one that Shep autographed for me. He was a great guy, his house was like a museum. Full of interesting nilitaria. Such a friendly man.

    Hi Phil,
I was tempted to bid but I thought you were probably bidding so I left it for you. ( Aren't I a nice chap :)).

Bill, I don't know what to say....:D You might have been OK, as I tend to bale out of bidding wars - it can get expensive, as there's nothing I want badly enough that I'm prepared to pay double its value.

Off topic, but Shep's diorama brochures in the Monogram model armor kits back in the 70s are what started my trip through this hobby. They were great.

Yes, they were excellent. Showed what could be achieved with a bit of skill and perseverance. Never figured out why Monogram did their AFVs in 1/32, when everyone else opted for 1/35. To be fair 1/32 is a far more sensible scale as it keys in to automobile kits and 54mm figures. I believe Tamiya were instrumental in promoting 1/35.

I think you answered your own question-1/32 is pretty much 54mm, and there were plenty of metal kit figures available, including Valiant kits, many of which Shep sculpted, and some of which he used in his dioramas. The British paras in his Ostwind Flakpanzer diorama were Valiant, if I'm not mistaken, as were a couple of the figures in his Sherman hedgehog dio. Jim went into more detail about Shep and Valiant in the book, by the way.

Monogram did issue its early armor kits in 1/35, though. For example, the Jeep and 37mm anti-tank gun, the amphibious Weasel, the deuce-and-a half truck, and the Patton tank are all in 1/35. With the first German armor, they scaled the kits to 1/32. And at the time they delved into armor subjects, Tamiya wasn't as well-represented here as it would become. The difference between 1/32 and 1/35 hit home for me, when I was around 15 or so, and bought my first Tamiya armor kit. I had built all of Monogram's armor, I wanted to build a Tiger, and Tamiya's was the only one around. And when I compared the figures between the two brands, I thought, "Hey..."

    Prost!

Thanks Brad - I shall read Jim's book with interest!(y)
Coincidentally, I just finished a scratchbuilt armoured car, based on 1/35 drawings in a Russian publication. I wanted to pose a figure with it, but the 1/35 ones I had were all massive. I checked the drawings against some I have in 1/76, only to find the Russian ones are actually 1/46!! There's a moral there...

Book arrived today. Any modeller who fails to draw inspiration from this man's work is in the wrong hobby. A real trip down memory lane!

Perhaps I ought to bite the bullet and search out a copy...one I missed when it was first published. Interestingly, it weighs just about twice the weight of a Colt 45 Peacemaker ! Don't know why that tickles me.:D
