Well, after an 8 month, hard to believe, hiatus from painting due to real life getting in the way, I'm more than ready to get back to the hobby. My wife is also thrilled as I'm a much happier person when I'm "being creative".:)

I wanted to start with more of a painting challenge and less of a complex vignette, etc. Therefore I decided to do an older stock figure from Andrea of Charlton Heston from the movie "The War Lord". I do love the movie related figures.

    Synopsis:
    The War Lord (1965)
In 11th century Normandy, a Norman duke sends one of his knights to build a defensive fortress in order to guard the borders against Frisian raiders.

As usual, for me, I worked on the simple base first. I wanted Heston to be in a field standing near a tall rock just to add some interest.

Using Magic Sculpt, I added a rock from my garden to the base and then used a piece of slate and a small pebble as stamps to texture the groundwork. It was then painted and I added a bush and some static grass, followed by a name plate. Base complete!

The next post will cover my start of the figure painting.

    Thanks for looking.
    Ken

Here are a couple quick photos of my painting in progress.

Obviously a lot yet to be done and probably several touch ups here and there as I move along. The colors are mine and not specifically tied to the movie. I also just wanted to be different from the box art.

    All done in acrylics.

    Again, Thanks for looking,
    Ken

Base looks great and I'm not familiar with the movie so never knew that the figure is a (cough) "tribute" to him. But looking at it with that new knowledge, I can see the likeness.

Looking very fine indeed Ken. Haven't seen the film in years, but that sure does look like Charlton.

Excellent work so far Ken. I painted this figure a long time back for a magazine article and I enjoyed it. I see it is still catalogued so it must have proven popular. I remember the movie very well (and I always liked Charlton Heston anyway).

Had the figure forever, but never made a direct connection to the movie. The movie is why I bought it though and I can see the resemblance to Charlton Heston now. You are off to a good start. I like the large boulder on the base. I look forward to seeing how you deal with falcon/hawk; the main reason the kit is still in my GGA.

    Thanks Ken,
I have this on my workbench right now so the timing couldn't be better for me :). It's great to see what you're doing with this piece.

Like the others, I had no idea that this was meant to be Charlton Heston. (Strangely I think that the Oniria 28mm Heston in a western is a better likeness!)

This is looking great and I'll follow along with real interest.
    Best regards

Love the movie and the figure (part of my collection too and waiting patiently for some bench space) and love your work so far. Will follow with interest.

    Oda.

PS: A real buggger when "real life gets in the way"and a heavenly moment when our significant others come to the realisation that we are "much better" individuals when active in our hobby than when we are idle.

Thanks Nap! This is definitely an old Andrea release. I've got a large stash of early Andrea and Pegaso figures, so expect to see one every now and then.

Ok, I think Heston is complete and now I need to move on to the Falcon. I am fairly content with the figure at this point but not feeling as confident as I was when I stopped painting 8 months ago. My "muscle memory" seems a bit off but I'm sure it will improve as I continue to paint. :)

    Be back soon,
    Ken
