    Hi

I have finally finished this one - a bust of William Gardener VC who was awarded the VC for an action during the Indian Mutiny. He is depicted wearing his uniform after the Crimean was which is why he is not wearing the VC only his 2 Crimean war medals.

it is based on a photo taken after the Crimean War, one of a series commissioned by Queen Victoria.

it will be released as a bust under my Sarnia Miniatures brand in a week or so.

    Hi Peter

Interesting subject and ideal for the series of VC winners ....he also won the DCM and MSM

The VC and medals are held in the Lord Ashcroft collection

Interesting the rank stripes on left but not in picture below

Why not enter a piece into the class of your choice in our OCTOBERS FOTM comp and also vote in SEPTEMBERS classes as well

    Hi Guys

    thank for the comments.

the flesh was a base coat of Vellejo flesh, over which I applied artists' oil paints, a mixture of : white, Naples yellow, yellow ochre, Indisn red, burnt sienna and Vandyke brown for the deepest shadows.

Nap you spotted the little bit of artistic license. I spent a lot of time researching victorian uniforms for a different bust and came to the conclusion that there was little consistency regarding rank insignia. There seems to have been changes over time, between regiments and even individuals. I have seen references to stripes on both arms and on only one arm, or even the flag and crossed sword insignia on the left arm rather than the right; so I opted to move away from the photo because I think it is a more balanced bust - and they are easy to remove if anybody wants to do so.
